PAGE 12 TERRACE BAY NEWS MAY 30, I973 ADVENTUROUS YOUNG MEN TAKE CANOE TRIP A Canadian wilderness adventure for six young men began in Schreiber on May I9th when they took the train some I75 miles to Missanabi, on Dog Lake where they began their canoe trip to Moose Factory, retracing the route of the Eudson's Bay Fur Traders. They hope to make the trip in a month, arriv -ing in time for the celebration in Moosonee. They first paddle to the north end of Dog Lake and portage into Crooked Lake from where all waters flow north. The next lake is Big Missanabi, headwaters of the Missanabi river, 360 miles long. : In the first I60 miles there are 42 portages and in the last 200 miles, 8. They will pass through the towns of Peterbell on the C.N.R., Mattice, on highway II, and then Moosonee. Returning they plan to take the Ontario Nor- thland train to Cochrane, then go by truck to Longlac, paddle from there to Jackfish, and from there paddle to the Schreiber beach on Lake Superior, to end the trip where it began. The trip has long been discussed, with def- inite plans made during the last year. They are travelling in three cances and a crowd saw them off at the train, with many quips as the gear, food and other supplied were loaded as to what they'd forgotten. In the party are Murray Robertson of Kenora, student at Confederation College; Lloyd Whiting of Kenora; Des Shipclark, of Ottawa; Tom McGrath, Schreiber, all Lakehead University students; Barry Gilmore, Schreiber, railroader; D'Arcy Furlonger, Schreiber, mill worker. TO PRESENT BURSARY It was agreed, at the regular May meeting of the Schreiber Catholic Women's League, to present $I00.00 bursary to a 5th year student at the Lake Superior High School Commencement. Highlights of the C.W.L. convention, in Dryden were reviewed by Mrs. Lorette McParland, Mrs. Norah McGuire and Mrs. Geraldine McCole- man. The theme of the convention was "Christ in Our Work" - from four points of view: in Day again with plans to be made later. Mrs. Lucette Chicoine presided for the meet -ing, with Mrs. Ross offering the opening pray -er. Correspondence was read by Mrs. Lillian Gagnon. The minutes and treasurer's report. were adopted as read by Mrs. Teresa Stortini and Mrs. Dennis Connelly. CHIMO CLUB MEETING The Chimo Club, at their May I8th meeting, sent a letter to the Schreiber Town Council fully supporting their proposed project to establish a medical centre in the town, this being, apparently, of prime importance in sec- uring a doctor for the town, and they being a group who might require immediate attention. It was agreed to present a resolution to the McCausland Hospital Board, objecting to one of the by/laws which prevents a citizen, over 70 years of age, from acting on the board. Iris Lidkea, and Inez McCuaig, took the pos- itions of treasurer and recording secretary, respectively, at this meeting, attended by twenty-four, with Lester McCuaig presiding and Harry Costall acting as corresponding secretary in the absence of Katie Verdoni. Mr . Costall read a lengthy report of the work to be done, and suggestions. for the use of the Centre, and owing to a misunderstanding, the appeal for the grant, will be re-worded and again applied for. Information was received regarding the I5th Annual Convention of the Senior Citizens of Ontario, being held in Sudbury, August 2I-22 but their finances will prevent the Chimo Club from sending a representative. Two posters for Senior Citizens' Week, June I5th, were displayed, one will be used in Schreiber and the other Rossport - Terrace Bay having received their own. Mrs. Rena Ross, Church Life Convener, re- minded members of the daily reciting of Mass during May at 2 p.m. Clem Downey and Ed Cavanaugh were thanked for auditing the books - Mr. Cavanaugh, with a smile, adding it had not been an arduous task.
