Cressman, principal, and Tom Quinton vice-princial, the hosts. Don Davey of Terrace Bay Public School, welcomed the gratifying number attending the conference, introducing the honoured guests, and asking E.J. Morgan, Director of Education Lake Superior Board of Education, to speak. Mr. Morgan, mentioning his retirement, said that it was indeed a pleasure and an assur- ance of the continued welfare of education to See so many young teachers engaged in a con- scious effort to better their profession. The guest speaker, Dr. J.M. Beniskos, of the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Education was introduced by Ken McLeod, principal of Terrace Bay Public School. Dr. Beniskos' subject was "Beyond the Teacher - the person". Using visual aids and music tapes, Dr. Beniskos, stressed and en- larged on Love as a means of communication at every level and every age, using the following points: what it means to be a teacher; the trauma experienced by most parents when they first bring a child to school; what they ex- pect; and what they find; what it means to be a person - love, in the relationship between adult and child; education has been, at times, in the past a brief meeting of the child with textbooks - from which they walked away with little impact made; in our new con- cept of education, communication between tea- cher and student is realized as the important factor - accepting each child's capabilities, in an expression of Love which realizes he is a person, with an individual value; freed from the tension of failure or success, real- izing he is just a person, loved, the student is able to accept academic knowledges; the teacher faces the challenge of being able to enter into the child's world - alert to their triumphs and equally import sorrows. The teacher, still has one great resource available to all - Prayer - or, by whatever name it may be called - thoughtfullness, rev- erie, or meditation - it can be a fountain of strength; methods, techniques or curriculum are not in themselves important, education will always be the ability to share or impart knowledge to another and this can only be done by the sure bridge of interest in the child, of which at any age he is very well aware of or - the lack of it, and by no other means, than Love - communication - concluded continued page 20 ......
