MARCH I4, I973 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 9 CHAPTER RALLY DAY The Annual Chapter Rally Day was held on Sunday, March 4th with the Women of the Moose Chapter I426 hosting the conference. Registration began at II a.m. with all members being presented with hospi- tality bags. Coffee and lunch was served prior to the meeting which was called to order at I.30 p.m. by Confer- ence Leader, Sadie Benko. Chapters taking part in ritualistic ceremony were for opening - Fort Will- iam, balloting - Terrace Bay, enroll- ment - Port Arthur, Mooseheart endow- ment fund - Dryden and closing - Atiko- kan. Address of welcome was given by Anne Stachiw and response by Marjorie Cook, Port Arthur. Addresses were read by all Senior Regents present. Conference Leader, Sadie Benko pre- sented gifts to past Deputy Grand Re- gent June Weller and to pianist Clara Gould. Senior Regent, Connie Monteith from Fort William Chapter offered to host the I974 Chapter Rally Day. Following adjournment, prizes and raffles were held along with a sing song. Supper was served by Loyal Or- der of the Moose I752. A good time was had by all who attended the Saturday night social preceding the Chapter Rally Day. SPORTS SLANTS - by Ray Shank Hockey fans - especially Boston Bruins hockey fans - have been prancing around with beaming smiles since Sun- day, March 4th. Reason: They think Toronto Maple Leafs presented the Bruins with the Stanley Cup on a silver platter by trading away 44-year-old Jacques Plante. Well, I disagree! Granted, ageless ol' Jake looked good his first time out with the Bruins a couple of Sundays ago when he blanked Chicago Black Hawks 4-0. But no 44- year-old can be expected to come with outstanding efforts like that all of the time. Also, I should admit that although Jacques had one of the best- ever goaltending averages in the NHL until joining the Maple Leafs a couple of years ago, he's too old now to look good every time out. Plante is still a fine goalie, don't make a mistake about it, but he doesn't rate with Montreal's Ken Dryden and a few others. Looks like the Canadiens pretty well clinched first place (Prince of Wales Trophy) the weekend of March 4th when they dumped Boston 5-I and the next day handed Buffalo Sabres a 4-2 set- back. Montreal's last four games of the schedule will give hockey fans a good idea how they'll fare in the Stan -ley Cup playoffs. Canadiens play a home-and-home series with Chicago, then finish up with a home game against New York Rangers March 3I and a date with the Bruins in Boston Gardens . April I, People in the Windsor area (myself included) sort of hope Buffalo nips out Detroit for the last playoff spot in the east. If Wings get it, fans here won't see hardly any TV playoffs. When Detroit plays at home, all hockey is blacked out in Windsor, which means the only games we'll pick up on the 'boob tube' here will be Wings' out of town games - which are televised on a UHF Channel. At this writing, Wings were one point behind the Sabres. It's going to go right down to the wire for that fourth playoff spot. In case you've been wondering on how the NHL playoffs will work out, here's the set up: Series "A" - First vs Fourth (east); Series "B" - Second vs Third (east); Series "C" - First vs Fourth (west); Series "D" - Second vs Third (west). Winner of series "A" will then criss-cross to meet the series "D" winner and series "B" champ will tackle Series "C" winner. In other words, it looks like Montreal will face either Detroit or Buffalo in Series "A", Boston and New York will fight it out in Series "B", Chicago will meet the fourth place club in the west (that could be anybody, but I think somehow Los Angeles will pull that out over St. Louis) in Series and Minnesota and Philadelphia will probably tangle in series "D". So, as you see, whoever winds up first in the east division has the best possible chance of taking the Cup. You want an explanation? Sure ...
