SCHREIBER-TERRACE BAY SEARCH & RESCUE It is possible for your love ones to be lost - please read on - Under the direction of Mort Purvis a local school teacher and a number of interested persons in this field the unit is in the process of being formed. It now consists of a Chairman and Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Five Directors from Schreiber and Five Directors from Terrace Bay. There have already been about I30 persons in the two communities that pave shown an interested part in this organ- ization. There has been considerable progress made in the few meetings that have been held. There will be an open meeting to all interested persons of these communities in the near future. Pepper, Regional library director, explained the purpose of the myster- ious pink dots on the regional library book q LETTER TO THE RESIDENTS OF SCHREIBER I announce to friends and patients with some regret, my intention to terminate my med-| ical practice in Schreiber in the near future. My family and I will have fond memories of our] four years living among you. We have very much enjoyed a life of outdoor activities in perhpas one of the most picturesque parts of Canada. Two of our three children were born in this area and for this reason alone, Schreiber will be memorable. Again, this has been my first practice in family medicine and in spite of the inherent inadequacies of med- ical facilities, it has afforded me enormous insight into the medical problems of the small community. I hope I have contributed to the wellbeing of those who have entrusted them- selves to my care. In doing so, I will have fulfilled the aim which, in the main, brought me from Dublin to this then unknown part of the world where there had been no doctor. As regards a contination of medical servi- ces for Schreiber, I recommend that the Town- ship approach the Department of Health in Toronto to obtain assistance in the form of a grant or guaranteed income to attract a doctor to work in the town. A special section of this department, upon request, is willing to assess the needs of the town, give advice on how to set up a more effective type of ser- vice and issue these grants. I have already advised this department of my intention to leave and submitted a full resume of the town's medical circumstances. This should pave the way for later negotiations when the area becomes a designated underdoctored area. Should the Township be interested in per- suing this course I am available to discuss the matter more fully. In conclusion, I wish to thank those res- idents of Schreiber who, during these past years, have extended a personal kindness and graciousness to me and my family. I wish to thank as well Dr. M. McCausland of Terrace Bay] for his support and in particular, Nurse Helen D'Arcy who unhesitatingly volunteered her ser=- vices and knowledge in the early months of my arrival towards re-organizing and setting up whatever medical services we have had. When I return to this area for vacation pur poses, as I fully intend to, I hope fo fish "relentlessly" and visit those places of myth- ical size fish which lack of time have not made possible and, of course, meet many of you again.
