The Hotel was opened in the fall of I948, and it's first manager was Gordon Bird. He was followed by John MacDon- ald, Neil Cornthwaite and Dan Rafalant. Mrs. Isabelle Phillips was the first housekeeper and had a hand in setting up the rooms, and kept them in good or- der until her retirement a couple of years ago. In the first year of operation, the hotel was home to nurses in the hospi- tal, teachers, Kimberly-Clark mill personnel and visiting management repre sentatives from Neenah, Wisc. Frank Strutt, the first Clerk- Treasurer of the Improvement District of Terrace Bay, was the hotel's first permanent guest, along with Frank Madden, who was employed at the bank. Mrs. Gerry Miller was the first Dining Room Hostess. Mrs. Russ Stevens (Hermine) who followed Mrs. Miller in that post, had the honour of present- ing Mr. Strutt with a complimentary cocktail, the first drink to be served in the dining room, mixed by Johnny Morstead, the new Bartender. Until then, there had been no cocktail bar in the hotel. Mrs. Mina Mahoney has been the Dining Room Hostess in the Hotel for more than 20 years. The early list of permanent resi- dents is too numerous to mention here, but many have made their homes here, and have a host of memories of those "good old days". The first wedding to be held in the Hotel and catered to by the staff was that of Dorothy (nee Daniels) and Murdo Campbell, who reside now in Toronto. So we bid a fond farewell to the Terrace Bay Motor Hotel with all it's memories, and say hello to the future residents of the Senior Citizens Home. The people of Terrace Bay bid you °* welcome.
