Quality improvements for the average 1973 model pass- enger car made in the U.S. amount fo about $125 retail, accord - ing to the f£ # f£ U.S. Labor f f Depart- ment. The # f£ biggest item in this total gf & # is about $75 for compliance with new Fed- eral safety requirements. This money will buy you bet- ter exterior protection, In- cluding improved bumpers and better side door strength as well as reduced flamma- bility of interior materials and better positioning, identi- fication and illumination of some controls. Another $27 goes for im- proved exhaust emission sys- tems as required by the Fed- eral Clean Air Act. Add about $10 for some volun- tarily added safety features, added mostly in anticipation of future requirements, and you have about $10 left for such non-safety quality im- provements as changes in en- gines, chassis and body. The annual Bureau of La- bor Statistics review is based on data supplied by the auto makers. My decisive defeat demonstrates beyond doubt the public disapproval and lack of confidence in my platform. My attacks and criticisms upon the Lake Sup- erior Board of Education were motivated by a deep conviction that | was expressing the opinion of the majority. | was wrong. The public's denunciation of my platform" leaves me with a terrible sense of guilt that | have indis- creetly heaped abuse and insinuations upon groups of public servants who were not only endeavouring to fulfill their duties but also had the confidence and approval of the majority of the people right along. I would like to apologize to anyone who | may have mislead or influenced against their better judgment. In closing this letter, | would like to sincerely apologize to every member of the Lake Superior Board of Education and anyone else whom | may have. unjustly criticized. The children were given an opportunity to observe a Golden Eagle recently. Mr. Kodila from the Department of Lands and Forests brought the bird fo the school after it was found injured and unable to fly.
