PAGE 4 TERRACE BAY NEWS NOVEMBER 22, 1972 JOE ADAMO MUST RUN FOR COUNCIL Because of my brother's entry in the Reeve race | had decided after soliciting outside candid opin- ions that it was inadvisable for me to run in the coming election. | called the town office and advised them of my decision. Today, two days later in checking to make sure that the ballot would not show my name | was advised that my withdrawal should have been in per- son or letter and therefore | was still a candidate and my name would appear on the ballot. Unfortunately this really can confuse many who will vote for my brother. | am sure that some people voting hurriedly will in error place their vote next to my name. | feel that a fearless and unbias Reeve is extremely important, especially since issues will be com- ing up next year which will require a strong hand and involve many thousands of dollars to the taxpayer. Since there is no way that | can have my name removed from the ballot | am left with the decision that | must not withdraw from the election. This year's election is much to important to gamble that my withdrawal will in no way effect the voting for Reeve. So | re-enter the council race and | hope that the voters sympathize with my decision. As a taxpayer and a long time citizen | am deeply interested in the feelings and welfare of this * town. We have a beautiful town and to keep it beautiful and financially healthy is my only concern. | have on numerous occasions shown my determination to attack anything or anyone which | honestly felt was detrimental to the towns growth and development. I have not in the past and will not in the future hesitate to take any steps against any individual or organization who might attempt to threaten the social or economic welfare of our town and its citizens. | believe that | possess sufficient ability and common sense to express myself in fulfilling the duties of a councilman. | have been in business for many years and | should have a fair knowledge of economics. | know that their is a tendency everywhere toward extravagance; especially when funds are too easily available. I am the largest taxpayer living in Terrace Bay. | operate the oldest business in Terrace Bay. Although | believe that proper facilities and activities are important for the healthy development of a 'community | do not condone extravagance, waste or shameful disregard for proper handling of public funds. Since my arrival in Terrace Bay | have at all times endeavoured to fulfil my duties as a family man, business man and above all as a good citizen. | feel that | have tried to contribute my share toward local activities. | shall retire in Terrace Bay and also be burried here. This should be sufficient reason for me not to sit back and ignore an election which could have dire consequences. The control of the town must remain with the people. Outside pressures have dominated two often many important decisions in this town. Outside pressure will in the near future endeavour to burden the taxpayers of this town with costly responsibilities. "| am sure that there are many people with capabilities to govern our town efficiently and intelli- gently. The difficulty is to get these people to run for office. Fear of jobs, fear of business, fear of antagonizing and fear of jeopardizing ones welfare are a few of the reasons for the lack of proper leaders. My only fear is that | may not have the opportunity to serve the town at a time when honesty, conviction and courage are urgently needed. | do not intend any reflection upon the ability of the other candidates in this election. | would like to advise though as an ordinary citizen that in the near future decisions will have to be made which will affect the company. continued page 5 ........
