NOVEMBER 1, 1972 "THE LAKE SUPERIOR BOARD "OF EDUCATION MEETING The Lake Superior Board of Education held its regular meet- ing on October 21st in the Schreiber Public School with R. E.J. Morgan, Director of Educa- tion, C. van Eeden, business administrator and H.J. Boudreau, accountant present. It was decided to engage Mrs. Margaret Sterns on a temporary basis as an assistant for Mrs, Deol at the Caroline McMorland School in Marathon at a rate of $2.25 per hour, effective November first. Alfred Allen, Terrace Bay, was appointed to represent the Schreiber-Terrace Bay Associa- tion for the Mentally Retarded, replacing Mr. D. Currie, effect- ive October 1st. Disbursements for the month of September, in the amount of $329,891.33 were approved for payment. Considerable discussion follow- ed on the methods of dealing -- with disbursements, the general feeling seeming to suggest: (a)the disbursements follow immediately after the approval of minutes of the previous meeting (b)that a time limit for questioning be imposed by the chairman (c)that trustees wishing further claiification should deal directly with the administration at a convenient time apart from the meeting (d)that a special board meeting be held, perhaps quarterly, to consider the progress of expenditures and to review the budget. The Rev. B.L. Lapier, St. John's United Church and Mr. N. Wood, Pentecostal Church, Marathon, were given permission to give religious education in the Marathon Public School, within certain arrangements. During the noon break the board was entertained at luncheon in the home of trustee Alec Gordon. A report on Early Childhood Education within the division was presented in precis from M. Averill, consultant, and R.A. Cressman, supervising principal of elementary schools. An oral presentation was given by Mr. Cressman with a question period following. Educational assistants will be employed in the program. W. Springer, vice-principal, Stevens Avenue Campus, gave a most 7.30% AVERAGE ANNUAL INTEREST TO MATURITY interesting, comprehensive and enthusiastic report on the International which he attended at Droset, Ontario, Sept. 28th = Oct Ist. And he suggested that the Heron Bay school be made into an Outdoor Education Centre for the Outdoor Educational Conference | * P. Ungar presiding, all trustees, : Division. Many questions foll- owed the report, and Outdoor Education was placed on the agenda for the next Board meet- ing. The policy regarding nomina- tion for teaching duties in Europe with the Department of National Defence Schools was approved, according to various regulations, resulting in not more than two to be nominated annually for these positions. R. Kitto, Lake Superior High Schoo! was authorized to accept a position with the Department of National Defence to teach in Europe for two years, comm=- encing September 1973 with all payroll expenses to be reimbur- sed to this Board from the Depari- ment of National Defence. Trustee H.J. Coe presented a report on the annual convention of the Northern Ontario Public and Secondary School Trustees' Association, held in North Bay in late September with details on the findings of two panels, dealing with spe cial education and the role of the principal. Mr. Coe has been appointed a director of the Association. It was agreed that loans for capital expenditures in each of the towns in the Division, be placed with the Banks in each of the towns, providing that rate of interest is equal or lower than other Banks in the area. The matter of dealing with pay of staff on jury duty was held over until the next meeting, Saturday, November 18th in the Manitouwadge High School.
