FAMILY COUNSELLING Marriage and Family Counselling? What is it really? To many, these words immediately trigger a negative response - "Nobody's going to tell me how to run my life." But a trained counsellor does not see his role as "advise giving," or "telling people how to run their lives". Instead, he sets down with a couple or family to help them identify where they went off the track and then very care- fully helps them develop new ways of identifying problems, communicate effectively, and gives them the tools to build the kind of relationship they had dreamt of and hoped for originally. Many persons who are at first reluctant to come for counselling find very quickly that they can relax since the counsellor does not make it his business to find fault or to establish "who is the guilty party". He knows well enough that people do not intention- ally disrupt a happy situation or deliberately hurt someone they love.
