The Canadian Labour Congress to which both unions are affiliated has, in recent years, made strong recommendations urging merger of all unions in the same or related industries. The IBPS and PMW and the UPP represent employees engaged in the pulp and paper industry, the second largest industry in Canada and the fifth largest in the United States. In addition they represent workers in allied industries such as the converting of paper products and in the forest industry. At present the IBPS and PMW in Canada has about 40,000 members, the UPP about 10,000. Merger - cont'd from page 1 NOTICE CONCERNING SUMMER WORKS PROJECT Due to our financial situation, the proposed road and park has been renovated somewhat. As has been noticed, the road has been cancelled, but several cleanup and improvement projects are now underway . The Beach is being cleaned and a 100 per cent improvement at the gorge is underway. Trails will be built in this area and a road improvement to the gorge is also underway. cont'd next column Twelve students are working in these areas and as can be seen, these areas are starting to look pretty good. We appreciate any helpful advise from the towns- people and hope that all will use and enjoy these improved areas. While it does explain the reason for these cut- backs, it does not justify the impersonal and cold way in which they were effected. It mentions market and economic conditions as the motivating factor but fails to explain why it was done at this time when supervisory personnel and staff have remained rel- atively constant over the past ten years. There is also a lack of explanation of the pricing policies of wood pulp which is produced at Terrace Bay but sold to other processing plants within the Kimberly-Clark family. cont'd page 3 .....
