(Summer of Learning Experience) is a project sponsored by the Youth and Recreation Branch of.the Ministry of Community and Social Ser- vices with the area supervision of Miss Marilyn Ingo. The original plan to purchase three canoes has mushroomed into seven canoes to accomodate the large number of enthusiastic Schreiber youths thanks to Reeve Harness and the Town Council. As the grant budget could not support additional expenses, the Council alloted money for the purchase of four more canoes. Four tents, life jackets and compasses has been also purchases. The initial traning consisted of canoe instruction dealing with paddling, steering, portaging with a strong emphasis on canoe safety. Overnight and several day trips to lakes and rivers that are not frequently visitied are planned in the weeks to come. Becoming more aware and appreciative of our sur- roundings is the ultimate aim of the nine week course. A study of organic foods is an additional facet as well as map study and compass reading. It is hoped that this course can be expanded into the schools and carried on throughout the winter. Since the natural resources of our environment are the most readily available they can not help but play an ever increasing role in our everyday life.
