TERRACE BAY NEWS Vol . 15 No. 22 May 31, 1972 15¢ Per Copy COUNCIL QUOTES Terrace Bay Town Council held a lengthy meeting on Tuesday evening in Council Chambers, with Reeve Cavanaugh presiding. Minutes were adopted as read, and correspondence was reviewed. The first item of business. was a reply from the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 223, to Reeve Cavanaugh's letter, stating that the legion and the Ladies Auxiliary would be happy to participate in the plans for the July Ist celebrations. A letter from Jack Stokes, M.P.P., to Reeve Cavanaugh advised that a scheduled visit to this area of the Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable W. Ross MacDonald, on October 10, 11 and 12th, would include a visit to Terrace Bay. Further plans for this visit will be made at a later date. Three tenders were opened with respect to the care of the Simcoe Plaza Boulevard, for the summer, and the bid of Mr. B. Comeau was accepted. Mr. Cliff Knauff was hired as Supervisor for a summer works program, using several local students, for local street cleaning in preparation for an oil- ing project. A letter from Reeve Mutch of Nipigon to Reeve Cavanaugh and council suggested that Terrace Bay consider a shorter period for Daylight Saving Time. Council felt that since the present system is Province wide, the main purpose being consistent with the whole area, it would be better to leave it on the exis ting basis. The Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs advised in a letter that they will provide metering inspections in several locations. continued page 2 ...ce.. PUBLIC NOTICE Water Pollution of Lakes Superior and Huron The International Joint Commission announced that, by similar letters of Reference dated April 15, 1972, the Governments of the United States and Canada have requested the Commission, pur- suant to Article 1X of the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909, to conduct a study of water quality in Lake Huron and Lake Superior. The Commission was requested fo inquire into and report to the Governments on the following questions Are the waters of Lake Superior and Lake Huron being polluted on either side of the boundary to an extend causing or likely to cause injury on the other side, or degradation of exisiting water quality levels in these lakes or in the lakes downstream? If so, to what extent, by what causes and in what localities is such pollution occurring and what remedial measures would be most practicable to restore and protect the quality of these waters? If such pollution is not occurring now, what preventive measures would be most practicable to ensure that it does not occur? The commission was also requested to include consideration of pollution entering Lake Superior and Lake Huron from tributary waters, including Lake Michigan, which affects water quality in the two lakes. Persons or agencies interested in the subject matter of this Reference are invited to inform the Commission of the nature of their interest.
