MAY 25, 1972 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 5 Walk=-A=Thon = cont'd from page 4 ...... With all the energy that the youngsters possess, it's no real surprise to have many of them complete the full 20-miles. However, there were a few "older" legs that managed to walk the route: Nap Vienneau, Walter Sitko, Ross Mitchell were three of those who did. Not to be outshone by their male counterparts, four members of the "weaker" sex finished the 20-miles too: Marilyn Thomas, Rosalind Kenney, Maureen Paukstys and Sister Paulette Hatfield not only covered the complete route but == by their presence on the highway == improved the scenery all along the way! A few of the younger walkers who did well were the following: Penny Luke (Kgtn.) = 10 miles; Gordie Lang, Ann Mitchell, Gordie Nicol, Linda Paukstys and Elizabeth Rochon (all in Grade One) = 10 miles; Craig Anderson (Grade One) - 20 miles. The top money-making "team" was the formidable combination of Debbie Vienneau and Walter Sitko who raised $61.00. Debbie had lined up a considerable list of sponsors but badly sprained her ankle a few days before the Walk-A-Thon. She contacted her sponsors and got their permission for a substitute to take her place. Mr. Sitko replaced Debbie, and he and Debbie's father walked the full 20 miles to raise $94.00 between them. Of course, the family earning the most money was the Vienneaus. With Nap, Debbie, Denyse and Danny all participating, they collected a total of $103.60. Of the grade eight students themselves, all but two were directly involved. Debbie Vienneau's sprained ankle kept her out of the actual walking, and one other student could not participate because of illness. Counting Debbie's stand-in, Mr. Sitko, as a grade eight student, there were 25 officially registered. All of these made it to Schreiber and all 25 started out on the return trip. Three had to drop out at the 12-mile point, one other was forced to quit after 16 miles, and the remaining 21 completed the full 20 miles. The grade eight students of St. Martin's School are greatly endebted to the kind people of this community who have supported this project so wholeheartedly. ~ On their behalf - - and on behalf of the parents who organized and operated the Walk-A=Thon - - may we say a very sincere "Thank You!" to all the wonderful residents of Terrace Bay.
