Tony, won the Crook's Pharmacy $25. scholarship and Linda, his cousin, won the junior aw- ard of $25. from the Prince Arthur Hotel. Tony is a man of parts = playing excellent accordion, leading his own orchestra locally, and, while the Festival committee were busy by telephone trying to locate him with an invitation to take part in the Adjudicators' Concert = Tony was already in the Lakehead, taking part in a basketball tournament. SUPERIOR VOICE THOUGHT OF THE WEEK : "Without labour nothing prospers." =Sophocles VARIETY NIGHT Last Monday's Variety Night, presented as part of Lake Superior High School's Winter Carnival, was a huge success. Musical entertainment was provided by Linda and Tony Commisso, Lynn Drake, and Ted Ross. Songs were presented by Robin Smith, Cathy Stokes, Debbie Smith, and Jane Crook. Mrs. Cougler rendered two selections, and Mrs. Forgues, Mrs. Angelini, Mr. Cougler, Mr. Fraser, Mr. Bishop, and Mr. Angelini were smashing successes in the pantomine 'And the Lamp Went Out". The M.C. was Joyce Cluett, Vice-President of the Students Council. INDOOR MEET The Lake Superior High School Track Team took part in an indoor meet at Lakeview High School in Thunder Bay on March 4. The members of the team made an excellent showing, with the results being as follows: Ron Chicoine placed Ist in the High Jump with the height of 5'7". Kim Gellert cleared the same height to place 2nd. Mark Stokes was third. Mark also placed 4th in the 600 yard run. Kim, Ron, and Mark were also members of the winning relay team In the Girls' events, Jane Chopty was Ist in the 800 yds., Ist in the 600, and 2nd in the 300. Tara Greenwood was 2nd in the 600. Janet Zwir was Ist in the 800, 2nd in the 600, and Ist in the 300. Congrat- ulations to all team members. BASKETBALL (see next column) Both the Boys" and Girls' Senior Basketball teams fought hard in the NW .,0.S5.5.A. tournament held at Fort William Collegiate and Hammarskjold High Schools in Thunder Bay on March 3 and 4, but they were both defeated. The Girls won one of their three games by defeat- ing Hillcrest High School. The Boys were unsuccess- ful in their three games, but all displayed good sportsmanship and represented Lake Superior High in excellent fashion. This wraps up the basketball for this year. Coming Sports Events:- The Lake Superior High School gymn team will be accompanied by Mr. C. Wilde when they travel to Lakehead University on March 25, 1972. The competitors in the gymnast- ics competition include Ron Chicoine, Mark Stokes, and Shane Walsh. On April 8, the N.S.S.A.A. gymnastic meet will be taking place. BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING Highlights of the Lake Superior Board of Education meeting held on March 4, with R.P.Ungar as chair- man: Douglas Hoffman of the Manitouwadge High School presented requests of students to visit as follows - (a) Lakehead University = years 4 and 5 students (b) Science Centre, Toronto - year 3 students (c) 1972 Provincial Interscholastic Conference = 3 students, May 8-12 at Windsor. It was the opinion of the boaid that (a) and others of this <nature were matters to be decided at manag- ement }evel . With regard to (b) a comprehensive survey of all such excursions for all schools for 72 is to be presented at the next Board meeting. The following resolutions were adopted: That the Board approve the appointment of Mr. J. P. Mul- ligan as Attendance Counsellor for Schreiber and Terrace Bay schools effective March 6 1972 at a salary of $400 per annum; That approval be given to proceed with plans for the proposed conversion at Manitouwadge High Sch- ool, that final approval be considered after bluepr- ints and cost estimates have been received; That a feasibility study be made regarding the introductions of Industrial Arts and Home Economics in Marathon; that approval be given for the intro- duction of Home Economics in the Lake Superior High School in Sept. 1972; that, effective Aprill, 1972 and annually thereafter, the Board office (continued on page 16)
