About 240 tons of the 8 inch thick cakes of ice weig- hin about 600 pounds each were harvested. They reported very little slush ice this year. The ice is us-" ed in packing fish for transportation to the different markets. It is cut by power saws today which saves much labour and the back breaking sawing by hand a few years ago. Men using long pike poles guide the blocks along a cut channel where they were loaded into a large truck and taken to the chute which car- ried them into the ice house. Here they are packed in layers fairly close together and covered with saw- dust. This work was carried on in cold weather and strong winds. There is always a morning and afternoon break for coffee and lunch which is always welcome. Winter has been issuing us a real cold season this year so far. Temperatures have run the gauntlet from 18 to 40 below zero since the New Year. Some. home owners had the misfortune of the water works freez- ing and tanks leaking from the steam pressure.
