JANUARY 6, 1972 TERRACE BAY NEWS School Needs - cont'd from page 12 ...... vantages of specialization and at the same time provide the student with a broader techni- cal experience than he has had, we should continue with the in- tegration of technical courses in 'technologies'. With the ad- dition of drafting we would then offer the following: electricity and electronics, electrical tech- nology, mechanical drafting and welding, mechanical tech- nology, auto mechanics and heat engines and automotive 'technology. "The present boys' occupa- tions and girls' occupations are heing re-structured into what will be known as intermediate technology and their courses would permit those who have the aptitude and the ambition to fit into the regular program after one or two years of second- ary school. "The present facilities are quite adequate for the boys' and girls' intermediate technology programs. "The school has very little to offer the girls in the realm of vocational subjects. After care- ful study of present facilities 2nd: consultation with Depart- ment of Education officials it's been concluded that home eco- nomics should be offered to the girls at the Terrace Bay cam: pus. The cost, as indicated under capital equipment, will be minimal. It is as important for the girls to be able to take courses in which their interest lies as it is for bovs to take auto mechanics or welding. "Girls should have equal op- portunity. And the facilities are there waiting to be fully utiliz- ed. We are prepared to admin- ister the program." It was. unanimously carried that the Lake Superior Board of Education consider the intto- duction of home economics in the Terrace Bay campus for September, 1972. Suggestions - were presented regarding vocational education on a divisional basis. The director of education, J. E. Morgan, was asked to ar- range a meeting as early in the new year as possible for the committee to discuss plans with M. Vasko, program consultant. John Kelly, accompanied by fhe head of the Marathon high school commercial department nresented a proposal for rent- ing the key punch for part of the year, having it moved from school to school for a period of possibly six weeks at a 'time. A meeting will be arranged to consider this. The Lake Superior Board of Education has arranged a prin- cipals' meeting for Monday, keb. 28-29. R. R. Steele, region- al director of education, and four resource persons from the Department of Education will conduct the workshop. : Principals of elementary, sec- ondary, and separate schools in the Lake Superior area, Nipi- gen-Red Rock and Geraldton have been invited to this event, which it is expected will be held in Terrace Bay.
