Wainwright, Chairman and Mr. E.J. Morgan, Director of Education of The Lake Superior Board of Education met with the Honorable Robert Welch, Minister of Education, in his office in Toronto. The purpose of the meeting was to present to the Minister the concern of the Board over the effects that the ceilings imposed on Ordinary Expenditures per pupil were having on the educational programs being offered in the Division. Representatives of the Board were accompanied by Mr. Lorne Findlay, Secretary Treasurer and Mr. Orval Grant, Director of the Northern Ontario Public and Secondary Schools Trustees' Association, both of Sault Ste. Marie. : A brief prepared by the Board and previously pre- sented to the Minister had evidently received con- siderable study in Toronto prior to the meeting. In addition, the following Resolution which had been moved by Trustee G. Fairservice, seconded by Trustee Y.T. Butler and passed at the May meeting of the Board, was also presented to the Minister to further emphasize the problems peculiar to The Lake Superior Board: - 'Whereas the majority of pupils attending Vocational Schools do so at the request of the Boards of Educa- tion, and Whereas said pupils, necessitated by distance, board away from home, and Whereas the remuneration to parent or guardian for room and board covers only a portion thereof, and Whereas some parents, especially where great distances are involved, find themselves financially unable to bring their children home weekends, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: a request be made to the Minister of Education to introduce legislation whereby in a jurisdiction having ten or more such students attending the same Vocational School with cont'd page 2 ...... JUNIOR "OPEN" SUCCESSFUL The Terrace Bay Junior Golf Club held a very successful "Open" Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, July 24th and 25th in which twenty-four golfers participated. The tournament was Medal play and consisted of a Championship Flight, plus three other flights. In the Championship Flight, six golfers played the final 18 holes with only one stoke separating the top four. Some fine golf was played and respectable scores resulted: - Championship Flight: - Winner = Ken Hanley - 159; 2nd - Jim Corrigan = 161; 3rd = David Adamo - 162; 4th - Mark Dashkewytch - 168. First Flight: = Winner = Mark Amadeo - 174; 2nd = T. Osesky - 182; 3rd = G. Lewicki - 183; 4th = Arthur Stachiw - 184. Second Flight: = Winner - Bill Sanderson - 197; 2nd = Greg Turner - 200; 3rd - Lorne Pinkerton - 200; 4th - Michael Gerlach - 209. Third Flight : = Winner = Peter Dashkewytch - 244; 2nd - Terry Hanley = 246; 3rd = John Graham - 261. Other important prize winners: = Best Greens= keeper - Roy Cornfield (thanks Mr. Cornfield). Most Honest Golfer = Johnny Adamo. Worst on No. 1 - T. Mcintee. Most Gentlemenly Golfer - Tara Greenwood.
