JUNE 9, 1971 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 13 SCHREIBER INCREASE OF SCHREIBER TOWNSHIP HYDRO RATES Schreiber Township Hydro Electric Commission Chairman E.G. (Gino) Caccamo today announced that new rates have been set for utility customers effective on all bills issued on or after August 1, 1971 Approved by Ontario Hydro, the new rates provide for an average increase of 14.2 percent for general customers and 14.7 percent for residential users. With the rates effective on all bills issued on or after August 1, residential customers will receive their first billing at the new rates on that date. This will cover energy used during June and July. In announcing the change, Mr. Caccamo said the new rates were "the minimum required to offset a deficit financial situtation and meet necessary capital expenditures". Effect of the new rates will be to increase the charge to residential customers using 750 kilowatt- hours of electricity from $7.40 to $8.80 a month. Existing charges for late payment = 5 percent, will be unchanged, but the minimum monthly billing for both general and residential customers will be raised from $2.00 to $2.25. Schreiber Township Hydro rates were last raised in 1968, and even with the increase remains among the lowest in the province. "The costs of labour, materials and purchased power are rising at a faster rate than consumption is," said Mr. Caccamo, "and the only way we can effec- tively cope with these charges is fo increase our rates". NATIVE OF SCHREIBER DIES In the history of nations and organizations, each period is associated with certain individual. Such an individual was Thomas Arthur Sanders, for 25 years editor of the Bulletin who died on March 9, 1971. A native of Schreiber, Mr. Sanders attended Schreiber Public School, Port Arthur Collegiate Institute and North Bay Normal School. He was an Honours Arts Graduate of Queen's University in English and History. During his forty-one years as a teacher in Ontario he taught at Echo Bay and Schreiber Public Schools, Markdale, Leamington, Oakwood and East York Collegiate Institutes, and at Northview Heights Department. He was a member of the Ontario Education Asso-, c iation, an executive member of the Ontario Secon- dary School Teachers' Association, a member of Hiram Masonic Lodge, A .F. and A.M., Markdale, Ontario and a member of the Church of The Ascension, Don Mills. : In 1967 he was awarded the Centennial Medal in recognition of valuable service to the nation. In 1970 he was honoured with a Life Membership in the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, and was also made a Fellow of the Ontario Teachers' Federdtion. Each new executive member of the O.S.S.T.F. felt drawn to his warm personality and attempted to live up to his expectations which you instinctively felt would be needed to effectively perform your duties. Executive members changed constantly but 'Tom' was a continuing tower of strength, and his knowle- dge of Federation affairs was unequalled in Ontario. Mr. Sanders is survived by his wife Jean ( nee Johnstone), daughters Patricia and Barbara and sister Hilda (Mrs. Russell McDonald) of Sault Ste. Marie. W.D.A. (Alex) McCuaig, formerly of Schreiber, and a neighbour of Mr. Sanders, were pall bearers at the funeral . "Tom" was always called 'Tine' by his old friends in Schreiber.
