TERRACE BAY LADIES CURLING CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING TUESDAY, April 27, 8:00 p.m. in the | Curling Club Lounge ; THE TERRACE BAY NEWS: An open letter regarding the Terrace Bay and Schreiber Secondary School system. 1 As most people know, the lake Superior Board of Education i on March 20th voted by a me jority of seven to six to recon- | stitute the Schreiber and Terrace Bay High Schools as one school consisting of two campuses with one principal effec- tive September 1st, 1971. Some facts and opinions leading up to this change are as follows: On February 10th, 1971, this subject was an "action" item on the Board's agenda at their Marathon meeting. This is when citizens and teachers first became alarmed as they had never been informed nor consulted about such a change. In fact one Terrace Bay Trustee did not know about such a con- templated changs until he received his February agendal A delegation of interested Terrace Bay people attended the Marathon meeting. The Board postponed the subject as an "action" item until the Februsry 20th Board meeting in Ter- race Bay. x At this meeting approximately 300 people attended. The Board received 24 presentations on the subject from parties in Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Marathon. The vast majority of these requested a postponement of the decision. I would em- phasize that these presentations were not in opposition to the proposal, but suggested more time for an in-depth study of the subject. More time for the teachers and principals to study and assess the proposal. : py The result of the February 20th meeting was the formation = of a special committee of the Board to do some fact finding on the subject along with other subjects and make a report to the Board in three weeks. Most people were astounded to think that the subject could be researched in such a short Al time; when the Director of Education admitted at the February 2 20th meeting that a suggestion made for a K, to 13 program would require 6 to 12 months of study. In the meantime, on February 24th, about 70 Terrace Bay people held a meeting and sent a resolution to the special committee and all Trustees. The resolution suggested more time to study the subject and postponement of a decision by the Board until September 1971 and implementation, if neces- sary, not until September 1972." It also requested the next T Board meeting on March 20th to be held in Schreiber or Terrace 4: Bay rather than in Manitouwadge. Apparently, the Terrace Bay Town Council made the same request. A reply to this request was never received from the Lake Superior Board of Education nor was the acknowledgement of the people's resolution. At the Board meeting in Manitouwadge a delegation of Ter- race Bay people attended. The vote was seven to six for amal- gamation. Four trustees out of five from Terrace Bay and Schreiber voted against the motion, One Schreiber trustee voted for the amalgamation. Two trustees from Manitouwadge voted against the motion. However, six out of seven trustees 3 Continued on page 9 cecces at ani a
