He had been reeve of the town in 1948 and a councillor in 1944, 1945 and 1956. He also was a Justice of the Peace. He had been presi- dent of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Electric Association, served on the board of directors, had been 25 years on the local Hydro Commission and this week was to have been presented, in Toronto, with a Life Membership in the Ontario Hydro. He retired in 1955 from the C .P.R. service as a locomotive engineer, and since coming here, had served in every office in the Brotherhood of Firemen and Engineers. A member of the 1.0.0.F. he had also held offi- ces in that association and their last rites were held in the McNally Funeral Home. He was an ardent supporter of his political party, offering his own home for many years for meetings to further their cause. During the depression years, he had been a foreman during the building of the highway, in charge of the road between Nipigon and Schreiber. Called 'Jack' by young and old alike, he supported by time and money, all causes for the good of the town. He and Mrs. Phillips had celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1969. vir, Phillips is survived by his wife, Edith, one daughter Ruth, vrs. Attending the service from out of town were Mrs. Johnson, North Bay; Rudy Phillips, Arnstein; tvs. Harry Nevins, Toronto; vw. and vs. Bill Weaver of White River and many from Terrace Bay and other points in the district. CHRISTIAN LAY COUNCIL MEETING HELD The first North Shore Christian Lay Council mee- ting was held on February 28th, in St. Andrew! s United Church in Schreiber. Although the Council is in its preliminary stages, it is to be made up of two lay representatives from each church in every community in the Lake Superior North Shore area. Attending this first meeting were representatives of Trinity Anglican, = continued next column ... Marathon; St. John's United, iviarathon; Community Church, Terrace Bay; Holy Angels' Roman Catholic and St.. Andrew's United, Schreiber. Some of the aims and objectives of the Council are: (1) to have meaningful communication between the churches and share the resources available. (2) to increase the understanding among the churches. (3) inter-church visitation. (4) exchange of program activities. (5) to initiate action in joint concerns. (6) to arrange for puplit exchanges - ministerial as well as lay people. g (7) to provide links between the firchet rather than build fences. : Those attending the meeting expressed their genuine concern for improved relationships between the 1 churches and felt that the formation of the North Shore' Christian Lay Council may be one step toward more eucemenical developments. It was also hoped this might be the first step on the part of lay people to seriously be considering the role and function of the church in today's society, by means of a eucemenical council. The next meeting of the new association will be held on March 28th at 2:00 p.m. in the Terrace Bay Community Church. EAST - WEST PLAYOFFS - CHEERLEADING COMPETITION On Friday, February 26th, Schreiber High School hosted the East-West Basketball Playoffs and Cheer- leading Competition. The Terrace Bay girls, winners of the western divi- sion were victorious over the Marath®dn girls and were presented with the NSSSAA Trophy . : The Schreiber boys, winners of the western division, defeated the Wawa team and were Presented with the NSSSAA Trophy. ¢ Six of the eight elegible schools entered the Cheer- leading Competition. Niprock cheerleaders won the = trophy in competition with cheerleaders from Manitou- wadge, viarathon, Schreiber, Terrace Bay and Wawa.
