TERRACE B/Y January 7, 1971 HOSPI TAL BOARD CHOSEN The application for public status for the McCaus- 'land Hospital is being processed by the Ontario Hospital Services Commission. The following citi- zens have been chosen and are being appointed to the new Hospital Board: John Ferrier = Terrace Bay; Alan Chisholm - Terrace Bay; Thor Olsen - Terrace Bay; Rena McAdam - Terrace Bay; Willard Vezina - Terrace Bay; Michael McCausland, M.D. - Terrace Bay; Donald Beno - Schreiber; Raymond Cook - Schrei- ber. This interim Board of appointed members will guide the hospital administration for the period when the transition is being made from private to public status. : In about a year's time the Board will be elected in a manner similar to other public hospitals in the Province. SPARKLE CONTEST WINNERS This year's Sparkle Contest winner's were: first - Eric Opas; second = Russ Stevens and third - Willard Vezina. This event is sponsored by the Terrace Bay Hydro ~ System and judging was held December 22nd and 23rd. First place honourable mention went to Mr. H. Milks and second place honourable mention to Mr. A. Cadieux. ; MERCURY IN CANNED TUNA FISH In a joint announcement, the Honourable John LAKE SUPERIOR BOARD REPORT 1970 - 1971 At the time of amalgamation, this Board opera- ted seven elementary schools. In an effort to pro- vide equal opportunity for all pupils, the Rossport Public School was closed in June, 1970. For the same reason, plus the loss of the major industry of Heron Bay, that school was closed at the same time. In January of 1969, the total elementary staff was 62.5. With the improvement and addition of programmes, later here-in described, the total elementary staff has increased to 65, excluding Mrs. Margaret Averill, Special Education Consul- tant and Mr. Robert Cressman, Supervising Princi- pal of Elementary Schools. Oral French is now in full progress in all elemen- tary schools, from Grades 1 to 8 in four and from Grades 3 to 8 in the fifth school . Four highly quali- fied and experienced teachers conduct this pro- gramme. Time and expenses are approved occasion- ally to permit these teachers to consult with each other in an attempt to improve and consolidate this new venture in this Division. Special Education is fast becoming a key part of the educational system. Mrs. Averill conducts a programme geared mainly to exceptional pupils and students. In brief, her procedure is as follows: pupils are diagnostically tested for weak areas, remedial programmes are designed by her and the classroom teacher; she assists the teacker in dealing effectively with the pupil in her own classroom by example and by a team teaching approach; finally there is a follow up of each case with classroom visits, retesting and redevelopment of programme. Guidance is now in full progress in three ele= schools.
