Rowsome acting as Moderator . In spite of.cold weather and hazardous wadking, a fair crowd turned out to hear the candi- dates for the various offices make their appeals for election and answer questions. Mr. Rowsome drew names from a hat and infro- duced each: candidate who was allowed to speak for two minutes. Snowmobile legislation, changes in Mike McCaus= land Hospital, and the possibility of a Grade 13 in Terrace Bay were the main subjects for the question period. Questions were written on slips of paper handled by members of the Chamber of Commerce, read by Mr. Rowsome and answered by the candi- dates to the best of their ability. Surprisingly, the subject of vandalism, police protection and their hours and duties was not a sub- ject for discussion. Reeve Cavanaugh, who was elected by acclama=- tion, expressed his thanks to the Chamber of Com- merce for providing a Town Talk evening. In his talk, he thanked the present Council for their co- operation over the past four years and commended the two new comers who entered their names in the contest for Council. In his remarks, he mentioned that he had been appointed to two important region= al committees, the Steering Committee for Regional te. Government and the North Western Development Conttee. The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association annual convention will be held in Ter- race Bay in 1972. UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS BOOSTED Labour Minster Bryce Mackasey has announced a 10 percent increase in unemployment insurance benefits effective January 3, 1971. This is the first increase since June, 1968. The extra cost will be taken from general revenue not from the unemployment insurance fund. The new benefit rates will provide an exira $20. monthly to claimants whose earnings == while pre= viously employed -- were $90. a week or more. Mr. Mackasey indicated that more than half of all workers now drawing unemployment insurance bene- . fits come within that wage scale. : Last June, Mr. Mackasey tabled a white pape which proposed new benefit rates ranging as high as $100. per week.
