AMENDMENT MAKES CERTAIN LOTTERIES LEGAL - From Consumer Information Digest Certain lotteries and games of chance are now leg- al in Ontario as a result of amendments to the Crim- inal Code of Canada. The Ontario Department of Financial and Commer- cial Affairs has established a Lotteries Branch, to supervise the procedures, rules and forms for the licencing and regulation of lotteries in the province. Lottery licences are granted by ;municipalities to religious and charitable organizations in their dis- tricts, and by the Lotteries Branch to carnival opera- tors at fall fairs and exhibitions, and at public places of amusement. A municipality may grant a lottery licence to a religious or charitable organization if the total value of all prizes at a single lottery does not exceed $3,500. For lotteries of higher stakes, a provincial license must be obtained and the application approv- ed by both the municipality and the Lotteries Branch. Religious and charitable organizations each obtain an application form for a licence to stage a | ottery from the Lottery Licencing Officer of the Municipal- ity (usually the Town Clerk). In the case of lotteries or games of chance to be conducted at fall fairs or exhibitions or at public places of amusement, appli- cation must be made to the Lotteries Branch, Ont.
