%0 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thursday, August 12, 1954 Wonen JO ALDWINCKLE WOMEN'S EDITOR CHILD GUIDANCE How To Correct The Child That Cries Excessively By G. CLEVELAND MYERS Children differ very widely in how much they cry or whine. As nothing happens without a cause we are naturally concerned with A the probable reasons for thesé un- pleasant sounds. Apparently the infant's earliest cries indicate hunger or ofher dis- comforts. The mother expecting some cries from the, infant tries to make sure nothing is hurting him if he cries long or often. It could be discomfort from his cloth- ing. It could be hunger, or some digestive disturbance, or other or- ganic trouble. About these she seeks advice from her physician. SUBTLE REASONS Even if none of these are the causes he could cry for more subtle reasons -- emotional or "nervous" tensi or exc ts induced by the mother or th whole family atmosphere. These, in turn, could impair his sleep, resulting in more strain. It is not long before new causes for crying gradually emerge. Giv- everything he wants when he wants 'en everything he wants when he wants it, he easily aquires new mediately satisfied. Jiggles, or car- ried about at almost & y time when he cries, he muy tend to cry when not so treated as often and as long as he likes. A never puzzle to the mother i. to know when the youngster's cries are caused DY What he needs. or ust | by what wants and doesn't need. UNSATISFIED TOT Certainly the tot from 2 to 5 has many experiences which make him cry merely because of his growing wants which have not been prompt- ly satisfied. His crying can easily turn into whining, or tantrums, as when No is said. But here, again, is bodily conditions may enter in. Being very hungry or tired from inadequate rest. quiet or sleep, he cries more easily, or whines or flies into a rage. So he may if he has some organic disturbance. CARE ADVISABLE . Therefore, we need to be vigi- lant, and check with the physician to make sure physical disturbances are removed wherever possible if the tot often cries or whines or has tantrums especially when such symptoms develop rather suddenly. We also need to check on our- selves, especially our voices, and on our ways of controlling him and trying to win his co-operation. How consistent have we 'gen? How resourceful at turning hua to approved interest and activities he will enjoy? How amply have we shown him love and affection. not only by caresses and endearments but by more enduring ways -- listening to what he says, enjoy- ing what he does, smiling at him and getting smiles from him? Let us observe his moments of relaxation and comfortableness, moments when he easily smiles. Let us look for more ways to bring these about. Then let's celebrate these victories.
