FIRST-AID TO THE AILING HOUSE By ROGER C. WHITMAN PAINT PEELS OFF WINDOW FRAMES QUESTION: We would like to know how to keep paint on our window frames? It does not last longer than three months. Regard- less of the of paint or en- type amel used, the finish cracks and falls off. ANSWER: Before attempting to repaint the window frames, coat the wood with a liberal applica- tion of linseed oil. After a half hour or so, wipe off all excess oil. The next step is to fill all cracks, crevices and openings in the cor- ners of the frames as well as the sills with putty and caulk all open spaces between the frames and the .|in the usual manner, I outside walls. Then apply the paint the paint peels off the sash, make certain that all putty around the glass is in good condition and treat the wood in the manner described above. FINISH FOR STRIATED PLY- WOOD QUESTION: We have finished our enclosed porch with" striated playwood. Since we wish to retain the natural look of the plywood we have been advised to use nothing bus wax. Others suggested finish- ing with white shellac and a coat of varnish. DOOR COMPLETE Doors -- Windows -- Moldings Shelvings--Plywoods--Wallboards STOCK OF ANSWER: Ordinary paste wax applied on the bare wood would not be satisfactory, because it would soak into the wood and there would be no luster on the surface. The manufacturers of the above plywood make a lacquer coating that is colorless and does not have gloss but leaves an invisible pro- ctive coating and seal on the wood. After this has been applied, one or two coats of paste wax can then be used and rubbed up to ob- tain a lustrous finish. If a high gloss is desired, finish with two coats of a good quality varnish. SOILED BRICKWORK QUESTION: The lower section of our home is of a smooth yel- low brick which, through the years has become quite soiled. I would like to know if there is a solution that I .could use to restore the brick to it§ natural color? ANSWER: If the soiling is of long duration, you may find it ra- ther difficult to remove. First wet down the brick with clear water, 'hen scrub it with a mechanics' hand soap that contains a fine sand, Plenty of hot water should be used with the soap. Rinse well with - clear water. Additional scrubbings might be necessary to restore the color of the brick. BRICK CRACKS AND CHIPS QUESTION: Would you advise sainting a new brick home with 'he clear waterproofing material suggested some time ago for the chipping of stone? Would this ma- terial prevent the brick from crack- 'ng and eliminate what appears to be mold? ANSWER: If the brick is soft and absorbent and the chipping is due to moisture or freezing in the brickwork ,the application of a transparent waterproofing may eliminate a condition of this kind. By keeping out the moisture you will also be able to reduce the for- mation of mold, but if cracks ap- pear in a continuous line, water- proofing is not a problem. This is usually a sign of settling or a structurgl-weakness. A competent builder should check to ascer- tain the cause of weakness. PORCH POSTS QUESTION: A few months ago I had a roof built over our front porch supported at each corner by three individual four by four posts. These were painted after erection. Soon after, sap in the wood began to run down the surface of these columns and, although we have us- ed a sealer to stop this, the sap continues to ooze out. What can be done to stop this condition? ANSWER: Remove the present paint down to the bare wood and then wash the surfaces with plent; of turpentine and coarse steel wool. If possible, try to purchase what is known as a knot sealer and coat the wood. If not available, coat the wood with shellac, then finish with paint. DUSTY STONE QUESTION: We have gray-color- ed stone sides to our porch and they are very dirty and dull-look- ing. Can you suggest any way to brighten up their appearance? ANSWER: Wet down the stone thoroughly with clear water, then scrub the surfaces with one of the new detergent powders using about one-quarter cupful in a pailful of water. Stubborn Spots may have to be scrubbed with scouring pow- der. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. A FURNACE HUMIDIFIER QUESTION: We have just mov- ed into our new home and have an old-fired hot-air furnace with no humidifier. We caled the build- er to check on this and he ad- vised us not to put one on for the first year of heating. Could you tell us if there is any reason for waiting? Or if it would harm any to have one put in now. ANSWER: Ordinarily it is not ne- cessary 'to use a humidifier in a newly constructed house because of the moisture given off by new concrete and fresh plaster. The use of a humidifier would only tend to increase the moisture tent COMPACT DESIGN SUITABLE TO NARROW LOT i WITHOUT BASIMIRY n---- rR very spotty. Is there anything that can be used to bleach it out, as we have one white ribbon and the other is a dark gray? ANSWER: I am sorry to say that it is not possible to bleach out the natural gray color in con- crete. The only thing I could sug- gest, for uniform color, is to paint the concrete with a rubber-base floor paint.
