Announcement of the new agree- ment, just prior to the 461st anni- vers of Columbus' arrival in the New World on Oct. 12, grants the United States the right to use a number of Spanish air and naval bases, in return for military and economic aid. The accord extends for 10 and possibly 20 years. Seville, Madrid and Barcelona are regarded as probable airbase sites. In addition to Cadiz, other U.S. naval bases may be estbalish- ed at El Ferrol on the Bay of Biscay, Cartagena, Valencia and Alicante on the Mediterranean coast, and Mahon in the Balearic Islands. BACK IN 1492 In the port of Palos de la Fron- tera on the Bay of Cadiz stands a large Columbus monument. It serves as a reminder that from there the navigator sailed on the history-making voyage that gave the world a new hemisphere, says the National Seographic Society. Columbus Day is a national holi- day throughout Spain. Genoa, Italy --the explorer's birthplace -- the West Indies, North, Central and South America also observe the date. It is a holiday in many of the 48 states. In the Canary Islands, off the Pact northwest coast of Africa, the 800, 000 inhabitants celebrate the "Day of the Race" on Oct. 12. Columbus made stopovers in the Canaries on all four of his voyages. Long con- sidered the western limit of the world by ancient geosraphers, the Canaries develor a new stock from the intermingling of Old and New World people pioneering At- lantic crossings. BAHAMAS FIRST San Salvador, an island in the Bahamas, was the first land reach- ed by Columbus in the New World. He went ashore at several other oints in the Bahamas on his in- itial 'voyage and also discovered Cuba and Hispaniola. The latter island now comprises the Domini- gan Republic and the Republic of aiti. Three galleons and 14 frigates, manned by 1,500 sailors, made up the second and largest Columbus expedition, in 1493. On this Yoyage he discovered the Virgin Islands, Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. One thousand colonists de barked at Hispaniola to establish the first European colony in the New World. Hoping to find more gold than his first trips had collected. Col- umbus sailed farther south on his third voyage in 1498. He landed at Trinidad and later, for the first time, set foot on the continent of South America. The admiral's fourth and last trip added Hon- duras and Panama to his list of New World discoveries. End Strike Over 18 Women WELLAND (CP)--A strike which broke out last Friday at the Gen- eral Tire and Rubber Plant here was settled Thursday when offi- cials of Local 455, United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum and Plastic Work- ers (CIO-CCL) accepted company proposals for a new wage agree- ment. Although a new contract has been pending for some time, the walkout of some 500 employees was brought about by company disciplinary notes sent to 18 women workers who attended a union meeting on company time. The union charged the women had been "discriminated" * against. Five workers at the plant were charged Thursday with causing a disturbance and doing wilful dam- age in connection with tomato throwing and window smashing in- cidents on the picket lines. All will appear in court here today. William Punnett, international representative of the union, said the company has agreed that all 18 girls given a week off will be reinstated. Nine of them, he said, had been given notices which could be interpreted as final dis- missal notices, but they would re- turn to work Monday with the ther workers. Y.W.C.A. They said the girl picked names at random from the telephone di- rectory, selecting only those list-|jj ing the full first name of the man. " She would phone and ask for the man. If the wife replied the man wasn't there, the girl would re- late a story of romance with the husband saying she hadn't known he was married. Police said they believe some calls never came to their attention and that several wives may be giving their husbands an unwar- ranted cold eye. They said the girl also posed as a dentist's assistant to call wo- men and confirm dental appoint- ments supposedly made by the husbands. Efforts will be made to put the girl on a more normal course of behavior, police said.
