HANDSOME COATS FOR FALL On the LEFT: glen-plaid in a soft-textured wool; with the top- coat this smartly-dressed man - wears a worsted sharkskin suit and light homburg. The glen plaid suit (RIGHT) is a two- button model, worn with a cam- gs hair polo coat and snap brim at. Vests Enjoy A Gay Come-Back Starting as a fad at Ivy League universities in the East, the con- trasting vest has become the dash- ing answer .- the plaint that men's clothes are drab and un- interesting. The seed was planted duri World War II when material was scarce and vests were eliminated from suits by government order. the single- and its more visible display of shirt front -- men thinking about vests once more -- but with a new dash of color and design. Now, the contrasting vest comes ng land .ocket flaps in all shapes, colors and textures. Tattersalls, plaids, overplaids, fig- ured patterns, stripes . . . silks, corduroys, suedes (even all-wool knits in all patterns). Additional '"'personality"' is lent these vests 'by highly individual buttons -- including pearl, brass, glass, embossed and cloth-covered buttons. No "uniform" look with con- trasting vests, either! * Double- breasted models, vests with lapels -- they're all yours for the -ordering. This year, the "Edward an look" is de riqueur, and with them the contrasting vest is right at home, for they were popular until the turn of the century. So, with the continuing. popu- larity of the single-breasted suit, it looks like the vesi is back with a bang -- and to stay! "53 Men's Wear [Tweed, Leather And Is Edwardian The "new" look in men's fall fashions is not really new at all! Today's emphasis on slim, na- tural lines in clothes may seem radically different from the over- stuffed styles of the 1940's -- yet it marks a return to the type tailoring pre-eminent in the Vie- torian era. In London, where men's styles are set, the new trend has bee called the return of the "Ed- wardian Look." With a lifting of suit buttons, slimmer styling, pre- cise tailoring, less padding, and attention to minute detail in the making of clothes . . . lo -- the W MALE LOOK! Its effect is one of almost milid tary precision, simplicity and di- rectness . . . but with an added decorativeness in furnishings The new style era promises to bring a return of the pleasure of being well-dressed something many men have not enjoyed for many seasons. The new trends have already brought back the three-button single-breasted suit -- and talk of the four button model -- as well as high-set buttons, slim lapels, tailoring to body contours, removal of trouser pleats, and the end of baggy, tent-type trousers. In sports jackets, "little ex- tras" such as side vents, neat "ticket pockets," pocket flaps and other precise tailoring details have been added. The belted-back and the pleated-back jacket are signs of this elegance, too. From its ready acceptance, the Edwardian Look promises to con- tinue in men's styling -- bringing back, perhaps, the trimmed shirt, the cuff-less, narrow trousers, and the five-button suit. Lamps Take On New Detailings The new - 5 in lamps created a bright note in the early Home Showings for Fall. Colonial, tradi- tional, and modern influences were much in evidence throughout the showings in an array of news-mak- ing styles. Bright brass is still the style leader, although burnished gold and antique finishes lend an ele- gant, conversative look that is growing more and more popular. Black metal and brass is the combination most often seen, with brass and wood a close runner-up. In the ceramic bases, new dec- orative interest is achieved by pebble and fleck glaze, coarse un- glazed surfaces, and under-glaze and overglaze painting. Pink and turquoise are up-and-coming col- ors, taking the cue from fabrics. Individually, each one of this trio enjoys success and, to- of (gether they're nothing short of ter- rific This noteworthy threesome is made up of Tweeds, Leather and Knits. Leather trims appear throughout the fashion showings and are used in the most imaginative manner. Soft cape and kid leathers have fashion preference over suede. There are leather - trimmed tweeds which rank importantly in the field of casual separates. With a leather - trimmed skirt, a smart leather weskit is terrific! Knit Details Favored Accessory touches in leather in- clude separate collars and belts to go with tweeds and knits, leather hats, and a wide variety of leather jackets. These jackets are particularly fashion-important with twee ds and knitted dresses. Campus jack- ets are mannish in styling; one of the newest ones being a leather shirt jacket. Bou The new-for-'53 tweeds are tre- mendously exciting! Stand-outs in popularity are the herringbone weaves, especially black and white, the multi-colored nubbed donegals, bulky tweeds, particularly in slim skirts, and, as always, the import- ed luxury tweeds. PRIZE SPORT JACKET A prize sport jacket . . . of slubbed, ribbed wool tweed with side vents, flap pockets and a ticket pocket. "R Brown Study" Prevails In All Fashion Circles After an absence of several seasons from the fashion scene, brown suddenly comes to the fore as a high fashion color for Fall! There are five important shades of brown being shown in the Fall Openings -- Taupe, the Mid-Browns, Sable Brown, Gin- ger, and Yarn-dyed Brown. The variations of these shades appear throughout thé fashion presentations of suits, coats, dresses, and accessories. Easy-to-wear mid-browns are featured in the largest - volume. These shades can be accessorized with either black or brown. Dressier sable brown is very dramatic in the polished wool coatings and in lustrous dress fabrics, such as Peau de Sole. For a sophisticated accent to Fall's brown tones, accessories are being shown in a wide range of imaginative color tones that are enchantingly named: An- tiqgue Amber, Tortoise, Benedic- tine, Bronze -- and many others. It's no wonder that fashion is five extending such a warm welcome [to this wonderfully wearable color! THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thursday, September W, 1008 35 Attention Mothers!
