' Cumulative total for the first eight months of 1953, according to the records of MacLean Building Reports Limited, stands at $1,277,- 564,400, as compared to the eight month period of 1952, which had a dollar volume of $1,219,933,500. This represents an increase of $57,630,900 and would appear to in- dicate that work, although drop- ping off slightly in August, should maintain a relatively high level for the balance of the year. Increases in the individual cate- gories were scattered throughout the provinces. Residential construc- tion increased in all regions, and the Maritimes showed increases in all four categories. On a Dominion basis, although residential was up ,233,200 and business increased by $10,261,800, « drop in industrial $1,626,200 down and a substantial drop in engineering ($59,750,300 down) produced the overall deficit of $28,881,500. Comparative figures for each category in August, (1952 figures in brackets) follow: Residential, $63,580,400 ($41,347,200); Business $58,243,700 ($47,981,900); Industrial, $11,794,200 ($13,420,400); and En- gineering, $13,257,100 ($73,007,400). The Maritimes section of the country showed an overall increase of $3,388,400 over the same month last year, with increases in all categories. Residential, $2,374,400 (up $1,267,700); Business, $5,243,- 100 (up $433,900); Industrial, $170, 100 (up $90,100); and Engineering, $3,138,400 (up $1,596,700). In Quebec, increases of $2,838, 700 in Residential and $1,367,300 in business were not large enough to offset the decreases of $1,571,900 for Industrial and $4.119,900 in En- gineering. This resulted in a total decrease of $1,485,800. Ontario showed a total decrease of $11,965,700 below 1952. Substan- tial increases in residential and business categories were cancelled out by a slight drop in industrial and a large drop in engineering. Standings of the categories: Resi- dential, $11,709,800 up; Business, $8,775,300 up; Industrial, $836,900 down; and Engineering, $31,613,- 900 down. x . In Western Canada, a heavy drop in Engineering ($25,613,200 down) and a slight drop in Business ($314,700 down) overbalanced a substantial increase in "esidential ($6,417,000 up) and a small in- crease in industrial ($692,500). The net result was a total decrease in the West of $18,818,400 for the month of August. In the 'Big Jobs of the Month" no one particular job was big enough to warrant singling out. In the residential field, three jobs were over the $1 million mark, At Montreal, Quebec, 75 duplexes and 25 apartments will cost $4.5 million; row housing at Edmonton, Alta., to cost $1.2 million; and 250 bungalow. to be erected at Ste.
