HORNER, Director Northumberland-Durham Health Unit | Cobourg (Aug. 12,19) ! Some 5,400,000,00,000 cubic feet of new natural gas reserves were Massey Harris Joins | Forces With Ferguson It has been jointly announced by Mr. James S. Duncan, CMG, Presi- dent of the Massey-Harris Com- pany, Limited on behalf of its Board of Directors, and by Mr. Harry Ferguson, Chairman of the Harry Ferguson Companies, that the two world wide organizations which they represent have agreed to amalgamate and to operate in the future under the name of Massey-Harris-Ferguson Limited. The uniting of the Harry Fergu- son interests, whose tractors equip- ped with the revolutionary Fergu- son system and mounted imple- ments have blazed a new trail throughout the world, and the 106 year old Massey-Harris Company which pioneered the self-propelled combine in every country where wheat is grown and whose develop- ment 'and progress has been so spectacular in recent years, is probably the most important news in the Farm Equipment Industry in the present century. It will not only bring together two progressive organizations, each of which has made an unprecedent- ed contribution to agriculture and has set a pattern wbich the entire industry is seeking to emulate-- but will pool their organizations which are spread wide over the earth, including manufactring fa- cilities in the United States, where they have five plants, in Canada where they have four, and Eng- |land, Scotland, South Africa, | France and Germany. When the Ferguson system was established, some manufacturers ymade the mistake of thinking that the ultimate in design had been reached. Mr. Ferguson, however, constantly emphasized that this was only the beginning and that a multitude of new machines had yet to be created to stop the drift from the land and make farming prosperous, interesting and easier, with shorter hours. During the past ten years Mr. Ferguson and his skilled staff in been working in the greatest se- crecy on many new machines. The Massey-Harris Directors had full knowledge of the success of the Ferguson system in the past throughout the world but it was only after a complete disclosure of all the new inventions, and a full investigation of new patents and applications for patents to give world wide protection for a multi- tude of new inventions, that they decided to make an offer to join forces wth Ferguson. The two organizations are com- plementary rather than competi- tive, and their coming together is expected to result in a great ex- pansion of their operations and a further increase of both Ferguson and Massey-Harris exports from {the United Kingdom. Sir John | Black, Deputy Chairman and Man- aging Director of The Standard Motor Company, which manufac- tures "Ferguson" tractors under the contract for the Ferguson Com- pany, is planning to extend his Company's plant to deal with the increased production which is ex- pected to result from the Massey- Harris-Ferguson amalgamation. The administrative and policy making direction of Massey-Harris- | Ferguson Limited will be the re- | sponsibility of Mr. James S. Dun- {can with the title of President, {while Mr. Harry Ferguson, whose inventive genius has made such a | vast contribution to world agricul- |ture has consented to accept the position of Chairman of the Board, | and will be responsible for the de- |signing, engineering and applica- | tion of the famous Ferguson sys- |tem to the new Company's prod- | ucts. | Natural gas production in the | United States rose 7.5 per cent in| 1952; petroleum output was up 2.3 | Russians Now Seem Happier LONDON (Reuters)--Sir Alvary Gascoigne, retiring British am- bassador to the Soviet Union, said Tuesday night the Russian people appear to be happier under Prime Midister Malenkov's new regime The 60-year-old envoy spoké to reporters at London airport upon arriving with his wife from Mos- cow. He will retire from diplomatic service after reporting to the for- eign office on his 21 months in the Soviet capital. "There has been an upward trend in the standard of living," he said. "It .has been going on for a long time." Asked if the Russian people looked happier, he p d for a second and said: "Yes, I think they do--happier than when I went there." Clothing is improving gradually, he said, food is plentiful in most large towns and "there is not a definite shortage of anything." WOULD ANNEX TOWN WINDSOR, Ont. (CP)--Board of control recommended Wednesday that city council proceed at once with its application to annex the down-river town of Ojibway and township lying between Windsor and Ojibway.
