20 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Wednesday, July 29, 1953 At Large 7 Years Ex-Internee Taken ot rd HAMILTON (CP) -- A former ,German merchant seaman plans to seek a lawful haven in Canada now that his past has caught up with him. .The life he lived here for seven years as "an exemplary Citizen" ended Tuesday for middle-aged Franz Jenisch, who escaped from an internment camp following the end of the Second World War. He was arrested by RCMP act- ing on a tip of his fellow workers at a farm implements plant who noticed he bore a remarkable re- semblance to a picture in a news- paper series of escaped prisoners still at large. To Jenisch, who went under the name of Jack William Krach and wondered from day to day whether he would be caught, the end was one of relief that his worries in one regard were over: He said he knew all along he would be caught sooner or later and "now I'm glad it's over--I'm relieved." The RCMP constables who sur- rised Jenisch as he worked at is toolmaker"s job said he was pleased when they told him why they had come. Sgt. Duncan McDonald said the RCMP has no reason of its own to detain Jenisch but he was being held in jail here to be turned over te army authorities in whose cus- tody he was when he escaped from a PoW camp at Cooksville, 15] miles west of Toronto, July 12, 1946. .Jenisch was interviewed by im- migration department officials who heard his request that he be al- | lowed to apply for legal entry to this country. | Speaking perfect English Jenisch | said Tuesday night in a police cell | interview that he plans to marry | and is "going to try really hard" | to become a Canadian citizen. He would go to South America, prob- ably Argentina, if authorities would not allow him tg remain. | He said he escaped because he | didn't want to go back to Germany | and because a request he made once hefore to be allowed to re- main, in Canada didn't stir any action in Ottawa. "] don't want to go back to Europe ever," he said. 'Europe means war, and communism, and hunger for me." The ship on which he was the engineer surrendered East Indies authorities in the In- fan ocean when war broke out. he crew was interned in the Dutch East Indies for eight months and was moved to Canada when the Netherlands surrendered to Germany. After his escape Jenisch met German-speaking people here who helped him with his English and a start on a new life. William Ireland, a neighbor of |' Jenisch, said that in speaking of the 'possiblg deportation of the for- mer merchant seaman: "They'd be very foolish to put him out of the country--he's a fine man." TRANSCONA, Man. (CP) -- A lightning bolt Monday night scored a direct hit on a power sub-station in this town five miles east of Winnipeg. The bolt blacked out the area for four hours and set a fire which kept local and Winnipeg firemen busy until daylight. Dam- age was estimated at $150,000.
