44 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thirsday, June 18, 195% BRAVES MOVE AHEAD : Milwaukee Finish Road Trip With Pennant-Winning Pace By BEN PHLEGAR Press Sports Writer those hit - happy Mil- waukee Braves made a secret ex- cursion to Yankee Stadium on their last trip east. Somewhere along the line they certainly stole a copy of the New Yorkers' private book on how to win pennants. Al the techniques de- in the chapter 'club 'em to death," the Braves mopped up their new stadium with Philadel- phia Phillies 9-6 Wednesday night and pulled 2% games out in front of the rest of the National League. The Braves came home Tuesday only a half game off Brooklyn's after a 22-game road trip. remedied this by winning two from the Phils Tuesday night while the Dodgers bowed to St. Wednesday night's victory came as the Cards again obliged by ymping Brooklyn 9-3. . Braves play 18 of their next 21 games at home where they have a spectacular 16-4 record. With second-place Brooklyn on the road and the third-place Cardinals still 6% games behind, this could be the Braves' big chance to blow the race apart. Chicago defeated Pittsburgh 5-4 in 16 innings longest game of the season in either league--and New York Giants beat Cincinnati 4-3. New York Yankees hit the win- ning trail again at the expense .of St. Louis Browns, who broke the New Yorkers' 18-game victory streak Tuesday night. The Yank- ees won 5-3 Wednesday with Allie Reynolds back on the starting line after a siege of bullpen duty. Cleveland Indians outlasted Phil- adelphia Athletics 9-6 to-end a six- game losing run. The Athletics had won seven straight. Bob Avila drove in four runs with a home run and a double. Boston smothered Detroit Tigers 17-1 and Walt Masterson threw a sparkling two-hitter for Chicago White Sox to give Washington a 1-0 decision. The Braves jumped to a 7-0 lead over the Phils in the first three innings with an attack which in- cluded home runs by Joe Adcock and Del Crandall in the third, let the Phils get within striking dis- tance at 7-6, then pulled it out with a final two runs in the eighth. The Cardinals, aided by a pair of doubles by Stan Musial and Steve Bilko's eighth homer, scored all their runs after two were out. The Cards pushed five runs across in the seventh. The marathon at Chicago ended when Randy Jackson singled with the bases loaded in the 16th off Johnny Hetki. Rookie Ruben Gomez, with help from Hoyt Wilhelm, won his sec- ond game in a starting role for the Giants. He gave up six hits in eight innings. Tookie Gilbert homered for New York. Billy Martin sparked the Yank- ees' return to form against the Browns with a perfect day at bat-- three singles in three times up, driving in a pair of runs. Willard Nixon celebrated his 25th birthday in high style at Boston where he gave up only five hits and contributed a pair of his own to the Red Sox' 20-hit assault on dour Detroit pitchers. Dick Ger- nert homered twice for the Red Sox, driving in three runs. Trice, a righthander who played a big part in leading St. Hyacinthe Athletics to the Provincial League nnant last year, currently is eading the International League roster of pitchers. The 24-year-old hurler from Georgia practically won his own game Wednesday night as the tletics dropped Montreal Royals A happy Ottawa crowd saw Trice stun the Royals with a brilliant four-hitter, besides batting in five runs. It was his eighth victory against three defeats. The tail-end Springfield Cubs de- feated the seventh-place Syracuse Chiefs 3-1 at Springfield for their fifth straight win, behind John Pyecha's five-hit performance. This was Pyecha's first League victory. Rochester Red Wings, who now trail Montreal by 3% games, bowed to Baltimore Orioles 4-3 in the opener of a doubleheader, but bounced back to spray 18 hits all over Baltimore's Memorial Sta- dium and clobber the Orioles 10-0 in the nightcap. Cot Deal held Baltimore to six hits in the Rochester victory, aid- ing his cause with two safeties and a pair of runs batted in. Tom Burgess rapped an inside-the-park homer for Rochester Jocko Thompson and Ron Mroz- inski pitched eight-hit ball for the Orioles in the first game, Thomp- son getting the nod. . Toronto and Buffalo were not scheduled. Castellani Wins From Langlois CLEVELAND (AP) Y Granite- jawed Rocky Castellani, filling the air with counter punching lefts, avenged a February defeat by Pierre Langlois in winning a close, split decision over the hard-to-hit Frenchman Wednesday night. Castellani weighed 158 and Lang- lois 160 for a bout that drew loud boos when the decision was an- nounced. Referee Jackie Davis scored it six for Castellani and four for Langlois. Judge Herb Williams had it four for Castellani, five for Langlois and one even and judge Charlie Bill called it six, three, one in favor of Castellani. The bout often lapsed into a boring, tugging match. Yankees Long Lead Seen Bad For Baseball NEW YORK (AP)--Will the bulg- ing New York Yankee lead hurt baseball? Will turnstiles rust in the American League? Is the race all over with 100 games to go? Or will the Yankees crack? The Associated Press asked these questions of several baseball men Wednesday with varying reactions. Bill Veeck, St. Louis Browns owner who feuded with the Yanks all wiser about television money, said: "The way they're going, I'd favor a split season." Casey Stengel, after a record- breaking fifth straight pennant as Yankee manager, finds the view enchanting. stand the Yankees winning, it's just too bad. Let them build up to us.
