10 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thursday, Jume 18, 1953 LOCAL FANS LIKE PETE GREY oh SPORTS MENU "Evefything from Soup to Nuts" by Geo. H. Campbell S PORTS EDITOR That's the kind of baseball that will have the Kinsmen Civic Me- morial Stadium crammed to capa- city, -hefore very long and certain- ly .before the season is over. Last night's game with Guelph Maple Leafs was a high-class brand of baseball -- after a weird first-in- ning start -- and we agree with several of the fans who made the identical remark last night, why go elsewhere to see top - flight base- ball, : Trailing 3-0 last, night, the Merchants came from behind to beat Guelph 7-3 and so continue their' ¢limb in the Inter - County race." The Oshawa team has won their 'last' three - straight games an "four of their last five games. They have now climbed up to within a small fraction of 4th place and if they keep it up, they'll be in fourth spot before very long. Last . pight's game was a thriller with Oshawa's great 5- run rally in the fifth inning be- ing the turning point. Dick Ber- ning's single with the bases load- ed followed by Chuck Aleno's ling + drive double, did the trick. the Guelph club for the next five innings. The pitching, the relief chores that is, was of excellent calibre and so was the hitting displayed by the powerful Oshawa line-up. Pete Grey, the one-armed veteran who had a stint with St. Louis Browns in the Big Time durin, war years; made a terrific hit wit the Oshawa fans. He can run like a deer, catches the ball ene-hand- ed, flips the ball and shifts his glove in an effortless motion and then throws the ball in, faster than most two-handed outfielders. He got a great hand when he hit a tri- ple. He had the only hit off Al Gerringer and was the only Maple Leaf to get more than one hit. On top of that, he had five putouts in right field. When Guelph plays here again, all the Oshawa ball fans should be on hand, if only to see Pete Grey in action. A FREE Ladies' night at Kins- men Stadium tomorrow night is expected to bring out the biggest crowd of the season. And :at that, he didn't show any more effectiveness than Osh- od dobany Waller in. the third ed Johnny Walter e en the slim left-hander ran 'to trouble, for the first ting fn some while. It's a free ad- mission for any lady tomorrow night, provided she has hubby or boy friend along to pay his own fare -- which is the same as "'two- for-the-price-of-one'"'. A crowd of over 2,000 is expected tomorrow night and we're ordering special warm weather for the game. It's Galt Terriers here tomorrow night, against Oshawa Merchants and it's a big chance for Oshawa to move up level with Guelph and Waterloo in the race for a playoff berth in the Inter-County race. MASON BACK AS MANAGER GUELPH (CP) -- Roy Mason Wednesday was re-appointed team manager of Guglph Biltmores of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior A League for the 1953-54 season. Oshawa Merchants continued their climb in the Inter - County senior baseball race here at the Kizsmen Civic Memorial Stadium last night when they defeated the 4th-place Guelph Maple Leafs 7-3, to chalk up their fourth victory in their last five starts and their third - straight since Saturday night. One of the biggest crowds of the season was on hand last aight. 'wo newcomers to the team and three, as far as local fans are concerned, saw action with the Merchants last night, Fran Dyson, th. Holy Cross U. first-baseman and Ron Ryba, Fordham Univer; sity catcher, both turning in fine chores at their respective position while Al Gerringer, young hurler, did a yoeman chore on the mound, in a relief role, after Johnny Wal- ter got off to a shaky start. FREAKISH BEGINNING The game opened with a flu of excitement when Marv Ric singled and Pete Grey sacrificed. Jeorge Carruth flied out to Dick Herning in right and when that outfielder started to make his throw before he really had hold of the ball, he muffed the catch and then threw wide to the infield. Rich, who was on 2nd after the sacrifice, advanced 'to 3rd when the ball was dropped while Car- ruth, who had kept on running, rounded second base and headed for third base, when the ball went wide to Aleno, back of third base. When Aleno recovered the ball, Carruth was almost to third, where Rich was frantically telling him to go back to 2nd. Aleno threw be- hind Carruth, to Herman Mason, trapping Carruth. He was run down by Mason, who faked his hot-box throw and then made 'the tag" himself and then when Rich start- ed for the plate and realized he was caught, Mason, showing alert judgment, faked another throw and then tagged Rich himself, for a double-play. In the second, Bankhead singled, Hoehm singled, scoring Sam Bank- head. Geo. Daddario grounded, forcing Smolenski and then on an attempted double steal, pitcher Johnny Walter threw to the plate to get Smolenski but threw wild- ly and Guelph's second run scored. |PETE GREY POPULAR HERE The visitors got their other tally in the third when Pete Grey, the one - armed veteran who saw ser- vice with St. Louis Browns in the American League during the war years, clubbed a triple to centre. He scored on George Carruth's single. Grey drew a tremendous ova- tion from the Oshawa fans when he tripled and again when he got a single in the 7th. He was the only Guelph batter to get more than one safe hit and in addition, he handled five putouts"without a falter, four of them being key outs -- as they ended an inning, with Oshawa runners on bases in each case. Trailing 3-0, Merchants clicked for two runs in the 3rd when Ron Ryba opened with a double. Wal- ter grounded out but Jimmie Jones singled to score Ryba then Hermon Mason and Ted O'Connor all singl- Phil Smolenski walked and Eddie | 1: ed in succéssion. "Butch" Lawing flied out to Grey, with one out and the bases loaded, 'to score! Jones after the catch then Dick | Berning flied out to Grey to end the inning. PLENTY OF POWER Merchants unleashed their hea- vy artillery in the fifth inning when the first seven batters pro- duced only one out. Jimmie Jones started it with a walk, Mason beat out an infield hit that Smolenski barely knocked down. Ted O'Con- nor grounded out but Lawing walk- ed to fill the bases then Dick Ber- ning belted a clean single to score | Jones and Mason. Chuck Aleno doubled to score Lawing and Ber- ning, the latter all the way from st That ended Sam Bankhead's stay on the mound and he went to 2nd base, with Marty Philp tak- ing over, Fran Dyson greeted Phil with a single, to score Aleno wit] the last run of the game. LOCAL DRIVERS SHINE Another large crowd was on hand at the Oshawa Motor Raceways last night in North Oshawa and the stock car racing fans were treated to the best racing of the season, with the Oshawa and district driv- ers proving that they have just about mastered the tricky quarter- mile track and are now ready to compete with the best in the busi- ness. The Oshawa race, first event of the evening, was run off in the best time established so far, by local drivers, with Don Fleming taking top honors, closely follow- ed to the finishing line by Lorne Pollard and Don Marks. . FENCE TAKES A BEATING The second heat of the night saw the hub-rail fence take quite a pounding as almost every entry, at one time or another, caromed into the guard-rail fence and back at | again, but all finished with Denny Dalton copping the honors. Merle Hepburn appeared to be headed for victory in this one but he lost the lead when he lost a wheel. Ralph Spencer drove a beautiful race to capture the third race of the night. His daring driving, tem- pered with rare speed and skill, earned him the admiration of the fans and a lot of votes as their Popular driver. he "little feature" was for the Oshawa and district entries last night with Don McClellan copping first place. The lead changed hands several times with the Pickering driver finally emerging victorious. So well did this policy of having the little feature event for Oshawa and district drivers, appeal to the fans that the management of Oshawa Raceways has announced that the system will be continued.
