Miss Douglas, 19-year-old actress daughter of Saskatchewan Premier T. C. Douglas, and Miss Grimmer, a 29-year-old economic research student, share a basement gpart. ment in central London, near West- minster Abbey. As with many other London dwellings, its char- acteristics are dark, antique fur- niture, shabby curtains and peel- ing wall paint. For all that, the two Canadians are convinced that their rent of £6 a week is reasonable for a roomy flat in central London. "Many Canadians we know pay more for less comfortable sur- roundings," said curvaceous, corn- blonde Miss Douglas, student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Al rt. ONCE KITCHEN QUARTERS The flat, once part of the kitchen quarters in an old London town house--hence the cut-off stairway --is half-way to Victoria station from the abbey. It's down one side of Westminster Cathedral. With expenses shared, the two Canadians figure they're doing fine--they"ve got what they want- They arrived in London in Sep- tember, 1952, and after five months in the same student hostel decided to team up and find something more homey, with plenty of space for personal belongings. They have several big cupboards, a long drying room, bathroom, kitchen, washroom, lounge, dining | Shirley ruefully. The apartment room and bedroom. But every apartment has its drawbacks. "There's just one small wardrobe | long enough for dresses," says has three wardrobes, two cut in halves by drawers. RESEARCH AT HOME Generally Miss Grimmer spends more time in the flat. This is be- cause much of her work is re- search done at home with books borrowed from the library of the London School of Economics. A graduate of Acadia University at Wolfville, N.S., already holding an M.A. degree, Miss Grimmer at- tends only lectures and classes of special interest to her research work. Her two-year scholarship to the London School of Economies is chiefly for research. For her part, Miss Douglas leaves daily for studies at the dramatic academy after an Easter break spent rehearsing a lead television role in the comedy play, '"Half Seas Over." The one- night television show has since been followed by a week's reper- tory production of the same play at a London theatre. At the Coronation she was re- united with her family. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas came to London with the Canadian delegation. Shirley | and her 12-year-old sister, Joan | had seats on the route. | SIX-WEEK TOUR Miss Grimmer also had a seat their feet are killing them. Instead |#ent. : their soft bones yield to the pres | on the route next to a teacher friend, Minerva Boran of Spring- field, N.S. The pair planned a six- week tour of England and the con- tinent. Asked how they spend their time in the big flat, with its old- fashioned electric cooker, electric fireplace and absence of central heating, the girls shrugged and said: "The same sort of things you do yourself." They attend to the chores and the laundry, make breakfast and evening meals, talk about their studies and letters from home, relax and listen to musical radio programs. THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thursday, June 18, 1953 § ~ ° Babies seldom complain that sure of misfitted shoes and only | years later is the damage discov- ered. To help you do a proper job of fitting your child's shoes, the Woman's Home Companion des- cribes these five stages of growth of your baby's feet and the kind of shoes necessary for each. At the Bootee Stage a baby's feet need exercise and freedom more than protection. So make sure those cunning bootees are plenty big and don't bind. And look out for shrinkage when washing. For the Creeping Stage baby will need shoes with soft soles and pli- ant kid or lambskin tops. Shoes should follow contour of foot and allow plenty of room for exercise. Learning to walk is the most Mistitted Bootees Play Havoc With Soft Bones of Baby's Feet fimportant period in foot develop. Shoes should fit snugly und ankle and heel but be full | infront to allow free play of toes | andl arches. Wide, flexible, flat | soles help balance and if slightly rouden prevent slipping. Upto three years his shoes need heavier soles but should yield to foot mevements. Shoes a slight rise built inside but outer soles should be flat. Be sure there's a finger's width between child's toe and stitching at toe of shoe. Up to sik years feet are still growing fast -- soft tissue and bone can still be pushed out of shape. Sturdy oxford ties with moccasin toes are good choices for boys or girls. Dress-up patents for girls should also be sturdy and proper- ly fitted. [BURNS CREDIT JEWELLERS LTD.
