The term family unit covers families made up of hus- bands and wives with or without children, and single persons out- side these family groups. The survey was planned and conducted jointly by the Federal Health Department, the 10 provin- cial Health Departments and the Bureau of Statistics. The object was to estimate the prevalence of illness and accidents, expenditures on health services and the amount of nursing, medical and other health care obtained by Canadians. The Bureau emphasized that the $373,800,000 spent by Canadians for the year does not include payment made by Government or similar agencies and therefore does not represent the total costs of health services in Canada. Further com- pilations of figures will be re- leased later. PREPAID CARE Out of the total $373,800,000 an estimated $88,400,000 or 23.7 per cent was spent in prepayment plans for medical care, hospital care and combined plans of care and services. Sickness Direct payments for services to general medical practitioners and specialists, for eye and dental serv- ices, hospital care, and nursing, both at home and in hospital, cost $203,200,000, or 54.4 per cent. Spending on drugs to $75,300,000-- 000 was for medicine -- or 20.1 per cent, leaving $7,000,000 or 1.9 per cent for care and services not falling within the three main clas- sifications. Of the estimated average annual expenditure of $82.10 for all family units, $19.50 was for prepayment plans, $44.60 for direct payments for services, $16.50 for drugs and appliances, and $1.50 in payments for other services, goods or care. Average family unit expendi- tures for hospital care totalled $9.60 in prepayment plan prem- iums and $10.20 in direct payments or a definite total of $19.80, plus an undetermined part of expendi-- tures of $7.30 in premiums for plans combining medical and hos- pital care and of $2.30 for combin- ed bills covering more than one specific service. AVERAGE FOR MEDICAL CARE Spending for medical care alone averaged $2.60 in prepayment plans and $19.20 directly for physi- cians' services, or $21.80 in all for medical care, to which again must be added a share of combined plans and combined bills outlays. Dental services accounted for $7.20, eye services for $3.10, and SUNDAY AFTERNOON 12.00 NOON JFRB-Salt Lake City Cholr CKLB-News: Treasure in Melody CBL-News; Home News from Britain; St. Michael Radio League -News; J.
