14 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Wednesday, May 13, 1953 BOOK CORNER Biography And History . Tell of Long-Past Days By THE CANADIAN PRESS When the National Council of Women holds its jubilee confer- ence at Winnipeg in June, it will celebrate the founding of the coun- cil in 1893 by Lady Aberdeen, wife of the Marquis of Aberdeen and Temair, governor-general of Can- ada 1893-1898. The Associated Coun- trywomen of the World at its sev- enth triennial in Toronto in Aug- ust also will remember that Lady Aberdeen inaugurated the 1930 conference which led to the for- mation of the international organi- zation. The biography of this remarkable woman, "A Bonnie Fechter," (Clarke Irwin) is by her daughter, Marjorie Pentland. Lady Aberdeen's active and in fluential life (1857-1939) recalls an age and names now part of his- tory: Queen Victoria, Gladstone, John Bright, Sir John A. Mac- donald, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Par- nell, Woodrow Wilson, to mention only a few. It was while she was chatelaine at Government House, Ottawa, that she became the first president of the Canadian National Council of Women, after having been elected the new president of an interna- tional council of women in Wash- ington in 1888. In 1897 she organ- ized the Victoria Order of Nur- ses to commemorate Queen Vic- toria's diamond jubilee. The chapters on her connection with Canada 'are particularly fas- cinating. On a tour across the Do- minion in 1895 she records that at Qu'Appelle, NW.T., for her hus- band's birthday she "gave him a white leghorn cock and three hens so that they can lay fresh eggs on the train." In 1938 for the Em- pire Exhibition in Glasgow, she Her initiative, faith in interna- tional effort, optimism combined with simple modesty and capacity for hard and detailed work made her an effective pioneer in the fields of women's co-operation and pub- | lic health. ONTARIO PIONEERS The experiences of two families | who settled in Upper Canada in the 1820s and early 1830s are vividly revealed in "Authentic Letters from Upper Canada' (Macmillan). Originally published in 1833 in Dub lin as a selection of letters from the Magrath and Radcliff families, | it i§ now in print 120 years later. "Authentic Letters" is an account of life in the colony, and was not originally intended for publication. The Magrath family settled at Erindale near York (Toronto) in 1827, and the Radcliffs at Adelaide near London, Ont., in 1832. Altogether 22 people came to Canada in the two family groups and five of them, including a ser- vant girl, have letters in the book. They describe the hardships of crossing the Atlantic, the rough- hess of the roads and the severity of the first year in the colony. Most interesting is the detail on the selection of land costs of moving to Upper Canada, equip- ment and supplies needed to clear and seed land and put up build- ings. Thomas William Magrath, 23 years old when he arrived in Can- ada, became a well-known figure in Ontario, and an enthusiastic sportsman. Five of his letters de- scribe field hunting in detail unique among contemporary accounts, Samuel Lover's etchings which illustrated the 1833 edition are re- produced. The introduction for the 1953 edution is by J. J. Talman, librarian, University of Western created a garden of neighbors | Ontari with a peace cairn built of stones from round the world. The idea for it came from the magazine of the Junior Red Cross of Canada, which describes the peace cairn in the in- ternational park between Manitoba and North Dakota. 0. '""'Authentic Letters from Upper Canada" is the first of a new series of 'pioneer Books' by which Mac- millan plans to discover and bring back into general circulation ac- counts of pioneer life to satisfy the growing interest in Canada's past. | Plan Commemoration Of Battle of the Atlantic OTTAWA (CP)--Defence Minister Brooke Claxton announced Tues- day that "Battle of the Atlantic Sunday," commemorating RCN and Canadian merchant marine contributions victory in the Sec- ond World , will be observed May 24. The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest of the war, 5% years of continuous effort to keep North Atlantic sea lanes open. Observance was previously set for May 17, but changed to avoid conflict with Victoria Day, being celebrated May 18 this year. Church parades will be held at naval bases and special services will be conducted aboard ships at sea. Questionnaire for Wives =) (Fill in and Q.
