The famous Nantucket lightship, first United States light seen by many vessels inbound irom Eu- rope, has been placed in a new position by the Coast Guard. It is now 50 miles southeast of San- katy Head light on Massachusetts' Nantucket Island, says the Nation- al Geographic Society, The Coast Guard explained that the vessel was moved to place it more directly on the great circle route to Europe, better to aid shipping in clearing dangerous shoals. Nanucket light claims its "Cross- roads" nickname because it serves more shipping than any other Coast Guard lightship station. Not only European traffic, but ship- ping between New England ports and the south finds the Nantucket a guide in avoiding Cape Cod's shoal water. SUNK BY LINER The lightship has been moved before, but not always by design. In 1936 a storm blew it 75 miles off station. In 1905 the ship on station sprang a leak and sank before she could be towed to port, and in 1934 the liner Olympic fol- lowed the Nantucket radio direction beam so well she rammed and sank the beacon vessel with the loss of seven lives. Nantucket light is one of 36 lightships stationed around the U.S. coast, marking shoal water, channels, harbor entrances and the like. As well-known as Nantucket is the Ambrose lightship at the entrance to New York harbor. The official transatlantic steamship run is timed between Bishop Rock lighthouse, about 40 miles off the British mainland, and Ami rose light. Modern lightships are sturdy vessels about 130 feet long. Crews number 15 to 20 men. In addition to the powerful masthead lights Brockville Ferry Quits River Duty MORRISTOWN, N.Y. (AP)--The firm operating the Morristown. Brockville, Ont., ferry across the St. Lawrence river announced Sun- day its diesel ferry had been sold to a St. John's, Nfld., transporta- tion firm. Frederick H. Kury, president of the Brockville and Morristown Ferry Company, sald the vessel was purchased by C. F. MacClel- land of Toronto, president of Cap- ital Coach Lines of St. John's. Kury said the ferry would be used on a 26-mile run between St. John's and Belle Isle. There has been no decision whether the Morristown-Brockville service will be continued by other : interests. The ferry, known as the Elmer W. Jones, was built in 1926 and has been on the St. Lawrence con- tinuously since then, with the ex- ception of 42 months during the Second World War when the U.S. Navy used it at Norfolk and Ports- mouth, Va. In foggy weather they sound powerful air FIRST USED IN BRITAIN The ships are held in place by heavy mushroom-shaped anchors on massive chains. The chains vary in length with the weather, #8 more must be paid out in heavy seas to allow the ship move- ment on the water. _ Lightships, or rather, light boats, were first used by the British in 1732 when a small boat was anchored off Nore Sands in the es estuary. She displayed two'small oil lanterns that had an alarming tendency to go out in high winds. In United States waters, light- ships were put into operation in the early 1820's, the first Chesa- peake Bay. First lightships to brave outside weather were off Sandy Hook, N.J., and Diamond Shoals, Cape Hatteras, N.C. The Diamond Shoals ship broke from her moorings several times and was wrecked in 1827. She was not replaced for 70 years. The Nantucket lightship station was established in 1853, and early records describe one of the first ships as a converted whaler with a crew of five commanded by a Nantucket fishing captain.
