Police Chief's First Report Shows Little Serious Crime AJAX --(Times-Gazette Staff Reporter) -- Ajax Police Chief H. S. Traves submitted his first re- port to the Board of Trustees on Thursday evening. The report is as follows: Gentlemen: I have the honour to submit herewith the first Month- ly Police Report under the new Municipal Police Force, and as you know in the organization of any new department there are numer- ous problems to contend with dur- ing the period of organization and a police force is no exception. With the d assistance of your Clerk Mr. B. C. Falby and members of his staff, together with your works suprintendent and members of the board we have ben able to adjust most of the problems which have arisen. ONE SRIOUS CRIME "We are pleased to report that the only serious crime during our first month o operation was re- ported. A man has been charged with two serious offences against children, and he is now lodged in Whitby jail awaiting trial. The car and radio are giving excellent service and we are pleas- ed with the police set up in gen- eral. It might be mentioned here that there are a few items requir- ed, such as a First Aid Kit, Flares, 100 foot tape, tow chain, blanket (kit and fire extinguisher. '""The three constables are re- ceiving continuous instructions and are improving. TRAINING CONSTABLES '"'Sergt. Hockley is doing an ex- cellent job both in his general du- ties and also in training the con- stables. He has worked long hours in the past month in order to as- sist in the many problems which have arisen. Several citizens have complimented this officer during the month on the manner in whic he does his work and for this I am very happy. Harwood Avenue Business Men Seek Fire Protection AJAX -- (Times-Gazette Staff Reporter) -- The Ajax Board of Trustees held its regular monthly meeting on Thursday evening with Chairman R. F. Hunt in the chair. A deputation consisting of 8. Huxter, H. Brock and J. Galloway appeared before the Board repre- senting the Harwood Avenue Busi- nessmen's Association to complete an agreement regarding fire pro tection for Harwood Avenue North (which is in Pickering Township) from the Ajax Fire Department. The deputation produced a map designating the properties involved and an agreement signed by 29 owners. Only one property holder Harwood Avenue Garage owned | and operated by N. Linders, had! refused to be a party to the agree- ment. The deputation asked that this property be excluded from fire protection until he agreed to Sign an agreement to participate in the fire protection plan. Considerable discussion ensued during which Chairman Hunt ex- plained it was an exceedingly dif- ficult position to exclude a prop- erty which, if it caught fire, would menace properties of people who were co-signers in the agreement and suggested that the deputation again try to convince Mr. Linders of his responsibility to his neigh- | bours and meanwhile the agree- ment would be submitted to the municipal solicitor for his opinion and the verbal agreement which Seek to Reopen Talks on Water AJAX -- (Times-Gazette Staff Reporter) -- The Ajax Board of Trustees have received a letter fram the Pickering Village Council requesting them to set date for a meeting to reopen negotiations for {a water supply for the newly in- |corporated village from Ajax. A meeting has been arranged for Monday evening, April 13 at 7 pm. now existed would be honoured. The whole problem is created by the failure of Pickering Town- ship to enter into an agreement with Ajax authorities to provide fire protection for the area. With the completion of this proj- ect, Harwood Avenue will have fully separated north and south traffic lanes. Close Harwood Avenue Lane For Paving Job Police Chief Traves has been requested to study the traffic flow in this area and make recommen- dations for control. The hazard to pedestrains at the shopping centre crossing has long been apparent to the Board of Trustees and the installation of traffic lights here is under consid- eration. Daytime traffic is not so much a problem as it is during bref time when factory employees are leaving work. Uniform Signs Are Suggested AJAX (Times - Gazette Staff Re- porter) -- The Ajax Industrial As- sociation has requested permission to erect uniform signs at street corners, designating the locations of the various industries. At present a bewildering multi- plicity of signs have been erected and the varying styles and color schemes have presented an untidy appearance. The trustees will give approval upon receipt of a suitable sample sign and its intended location. Ajax Legion Ruxiliary Entertains AJAX--Some 60 members of the Legion Auxiliary from Branch 43 Oshawa, were guests of the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 322, in Ajax on Thursday evening. A set down supper was served and was followed by entertainment in which all took part.
