White Trim Grows Popular In Spring Styles Of Pumps The new Spring fashions herald |and steetwear dresses, especially "the new in shoes" -- an exciting and fashionable array of footwear, beautifully designed to complement and enchance the wardrobes of the season. The classic pump looks new again for spring, being lighter in weight, softer in construction slimmer in line, and higher as to heel. There is infinite variety in umps, with a wide choice of con- rasting trim and heel contours. The sling is a big favorite, but the closed pump runs it a close second for early Spring wear. At the top of the fashion news for Spring is patent leather, a most popular accent for the subdued col- ors and pastels that will be seen everywhere. FLATTERING STYLES Especially flattering are the pointed toe styles with low square cut vamp and very high curved heel, the refreshingly open sandal with a single curved strap, and the closed front and back styles with open sides. Inspired by the extensive use of tent this Spring are the interest- ov uses of this glossy leather as a matching piping on both formal NECCHI ~ YOU'VE NEVER SEEN A SEWING MACHINE LIKE NECCHI BEFORE! ® sews on buttons! | ® blind-stitches hems) i ® monograms) ® embroiders! . © makes buttonholesf! ® copliques! Umbrella cases, handbags, and hat and glove trim- mings in patent leather make for a sleek ensemble look when worn with the new patent shoes. Also new-looking, very smart and sophisticated, is the tailored pump, again with the very high curved heel, in one of the beautiful soft shades of aniline calf, light wood tones and warm beiges. The feminine touch of a low cut en- velope vamp bound with contrast- ing leather gives a soft look suited | to the newly feminine tweeds and | flannels. : Suede is seen in black and rich navy in more open types of pumps to wear with silk town suits and ensembles. In some instance suede is combined with faille in these dress pumps for more formal cos- tumes. Elasticized suede will give glove-perfect fit to closed styles. TOUCHES OF WHITE Touches of white are as import- ant on the first Spring shoes as they are on costumes themselves. Never have there been so many white trimmed shoes as this sea- son, introducing white as a major fashion theme right through Spring and Summer. White combines with black, navy, ¢spring tans and browns, bright red or royal blue, depending on the type of castume. Newest of all is white with grey, heralding the return of the grey shoe 'to the fashion picture. Especially suited to the mood of Spring is the fresh look of nylon mesh with patent. It's an open Many an otherwise conservative man welcomes the opportunity to give full sway to his flair for color and his urge to individuality and variety in the choice of his sports wear, This Spring, he will find the sports wear style stage lavishly set with a bright array of styles and colors to spur-his imagination and give wide scope to his tastes. Gayer and lighter in tone are the colors featured in the new Spring sports coats, which present a fascinating variety of fabric pat- terns, including plaids, checks, stripes and herring-bonts. 3 Favored among the fabrics are soft, lightweight tweeds, shetlands and cheviots, togethen with waoolens and worsteds with strong surface interest. This is achieved by the use of slubs and nubs which create an impression of depth in the cloth and enhance the richness of the color effects. Adding top the attractiveness of the Sprimg fabrics picture are the specialty fibers, notably cashmere and mohair, which come both alone and in blends with wool ' which create complelely new fabrics. The orlons, dacrons and various blends of these and other man-made fib- ers with wool are looming large on the style scene. NEW STYLE FAMILIES Among the new styles bowing in for Spring is the one-button sports coat model. Created in California this newcomer is reported due to give the more conventional two- and three-button models a strong run for top honors. Style touches that will identify the new sport coats as "definitely 1953" are the ticket pocket, side vens, pleated back and leather- covered buttons. Variety Is Spice Of Modern Sportswear Fancy waistcoats will continue to grow in popularity this Spring. Tat- tersalls will lead by a wide mar- gin. Plain solid colors and tartans will also be frequently seen, along |m pit some striped 'reps and fou- ards. As to slacks, flannel will con- tinue to share honors with wool gabardine in the top-favorite brack- et, with the various man-made fib- ers and blends sure to claim a healthy slice of the market. Many new and novelty fabrics, such as cotton shark-skins (extremely light yet tough and durable), shamnbrays denims and lightweight pure si will add to the diversity of the fabrics line-up. For active sports, the always popular pullover will feature a wide variety of designs, includin diagonal stripes and multi-color patterns of Scandinavian flavor to- gether with diamond patterns, hunting themes and other novelty effects. As usual, solid colors will continue in strong favor in the pullovers. Wool fabrics will retain their popularity with sports participants even in ihe warmest weather. Be- causé the wool fiber can absorb 30 per cent of its weight, without feeling damp, it tends to elimin- ate unpleasant "clamminess" when a man perspires. The sleeveless sweater will be offered in both pullover and but- ton-front versions: Sweater-vests will feature plaids, tattersall checks and small stripes. The lighter Spring shades --tan, yellow, soft gray. light blue, light green and medium red 11 be widely seen in sleeveless and full- sleeved pullovers as well as in cardigans and turtle-neck models. or calf to give pumps and sandals a new delicacy and. charm. Typical of the new feeling is a high-banded scandal for the town coat or suit, combining black nylon mesh wwth patent. It's an open sling on a high heel, with three wide bands of black mesh edged with patent riding high on the in- step and a very narrow band of the patent to form the back of the shoe, especially flattering with one of the new black silk coats or form- al black suits. In a slightly more losed sling pump of navy suede and mesh, the buckled back strap and heel are of the suede, and curving bands of suede make a graceful pattern on the mesh vamp. MESH IS POPULAR . Natural or eggshell mesh with black patent is exceedingly smart in narrow strippings or half and | half treatments, Eggshell with tan leather combined with mesh in cool and fresh. White or natural mesh is also combined with bril- liant red, blues and greens In soft- typed leathers to make some of the more exotic of the casual shoes, wedgies, platforms, and similar styles. Another very important fashion is the all-over white shoe in smooth leathtr combined with mesh in banded or stripping designs, also in open and closed pumps. For cock- tail and evening slippers, nylon mesh in new textured weaves, em- broidered, beaded, or in very lacy patterns makes the daintiest of dancing shoes. For monotone ensembles, choose three colors to go with white: na- tural and pastel clothes later in the season. LONDON (CP) -- Cpl. TIVERTON, England (CP)--Max Lloyd, a farmer of this Devon- shire district, lost a bottle of stout in a hedge five years ago. After finding it recently, he pronounced it "all the better for keeping." Popularity of tweeds in Fall top- coats is a trend which will con- tinue even stronger in Spring, coat manufacturers predict. Tweeds and shetlands have al- most doubled in populdrity over Spring a year ago as men across the country turn to the rich new wool patterns. Saxony and cheviot weaves are expected to come up in popularity as well. The Spring coloring of the tw patterns is espec cheerful an light in feeling. For instance, some rough' tweeds have tel nubs-- light blue, clear yellow, etc. over sober tan or grayish - tan back colors, and the, effect is of one color showing through the other. Other tweeds have patterns in large box overplaids and some have overall houndstooth or step patterns, but all rely on lighter ground colors with either the pas- tel highlights or heavier colors in Spring casts, LIGHTER SHADES DOMINANT The Spring color pattern as re- flected in advance buying of men's stores for Spring shows the lighter shades far ahead. Tan, gray and light blue, in that order, are the most widely - liked colors. The dark shades which are in favor are dark blue, brown and green, in that order. The newest - looking topcoat cuts are those with set-in sleeves, as in a suit coat and the balmacaan col- lar. This is reminiscent of the Bus- ter Brown collar of children's clothes or of the military capes such as West Pointers wear. Next in the new cuts is the rag- lan sleeve cut, again with the bal or balmacaan collar, The raglan sleeve is cut in long - pointed tri- angles which lie over the shoulder and converge at the neck.
