The Scarboro summer theatre which bravely started out to give the suburban Scarboro district top entertainment, had a first-rate aud- itorium and its troupe was one of the best. Producer Don Glen, who has had previous summer theatre work at Niagara Falls and Peter- borough, said its closing was 'not defeat, but a withdrawal in order to make our plans for next year." Since June 30 the group gave the suburban area a sparkling bill of theatre fare. But for the most past it played to many empty seats. "How can you get the people out?" asked business manager Cal Whitehead, formerly of Vancouver. Some thought it might have been because the players were pioneer- ing in a district that never before had a resident stage company. Others said the troupe was too far out to draw the Toronto crowds. It takes a trip by bus and street- car to cover the 15 miles to the theatre from the centre of the city. Whatever the cause, the company recently put on a superb production of Lesley Storm's family tragedy "Black Chiffon" to such a small Straw Hat Theatre Fails To Draw at Scarboro audience that the applause made little noise in Scarboro Collegiate's big auditorium. Company director Robert Christie starred in "Black Chiffon," and another experienced player is Christine Thomas, formerly of the London, Ont, Little Theatre.
