REGENT ESTHER WILLIAMS, RED SKEL- TON AND HOWARD KEEL COM- ING TO THE REGENT IN "TEXAS CARNIVAL" There is happy entertainment for everybody in M-G-M's star-song-and- laugh-loaded new Technicolor musi- cal, "Texas Carnival," coming to the Regent Theatre next Friday. Esther Williams shows off that famous aqua-figure, this time as a carnival trouper. Her job is to sit in a bath- ing suit on a break-away seat con- structed over a tank of water. Pa- trons pay to throw balls at a target and if it is hit, Esther gets a dunk- ing. The spieler for this act is Red Skelton, who gets himself and his star performer into , more trouble than a barrel of monkeys. For songs ou have Howard Keel as a war- ling cowhand, For dancing you've ot fast-stepping Ann Miller, with Ty Raymond and Keenan Wynn also on hand in a story which sets a bh record pace for hilarity and which winds up with Skelton winning a chuck wagon race in which he does everything but drive the horses while standing on his head! The troubles and laughs begin when Cornelius Quinell (Skelton) be- friends drunken cattle baron Dan Sabinas (Wynn), who insists on giv- ing the spleler his expensive car. When Cornie and Deborah Telford (Miss Williams) drive to Sabinas' hotel, with the intention of return- ing the car, they are mistaken for the wealthy Sabinas and his sister, Marilla (Paula Raymond). Debbie ets involved in a romance with lim Shelby (HoWard Keel) while Cornie has a hard time eluding the clutches of the sheriff's daughter, Sunshine Jackson (Ann Miller). How the imposters are finally exposed, the circumstances which involve them in the frantic chuck . wagon race and the eventual romantic de- , mouement make up the threads of the plot, highlighted by song-and- dance interpolations and an unfor- settable dream sequence in which ebbie, wearing a diaphanous negli- gee, floats around a room. The songs, by Dorothy Fields and Harry Warren, are all humable and include 'Whoa, Emma' and "Young Folks Should Be Married," sung by Howard Keel, "Cornie"s Pitch,' sung b; Skelton and Miss Williams, | Skelton"s hilarious "Schnaps' num- | ber, and "It's Dynamite," sung and danced by Ann Miller. "Texas Carnival' have been given freshness and distinction in the di- rection of talented Charles Walters, with Jack Cummings producing. It is the third starring vehicle for Esther | Williams and Red Skelton, who scor- | ed together previously in "Bathing Beauty' and "Neptune"s Daughter" and is even more of a delight than their earlier hits. It will prove a carnival of fun for every member of the family.
