A crowd of 38,000 saw the. visitors take a 2-1 lead in the first half on Stoke's home ground. Despite this setback Derby re- mains on top of the heap. But the day's results left Newcastle United only one point behind after a 3-2 victory over Sheffield United. Portsmouth, which had shared second place . with Newcastle United, dropped to third position when held to a 2-2 draw by Man- chester United. In the Second Division West Bromwich Albion consolidated their lead with a 5-2 victory over Grimsby Town. Tottenham Hot- spur defeated Plymouth Argyle 3-0 and Southampton edged Lincoln City 2-1. These results left Tottenham and Southampton still sharing second place. In Football Cup fixtures hard- fighting Leytonstone went down before Newport County 4-3: in a tough overtime game. Walthamstow Avenue and Oldham tied 2-2, the "Avenue" lasting the fast pace just as well as their opponents. In a single Third Division North- ern fixture Hartlepools United beat Accrington Stanley 2-1.
