Such ease of craftsmanship in works so rapid- ly turned out is not surprising in Handel, for his free, informal style complemented his determination to make the most of brief periods of good health. The Concerti Grossi differ from other concerti in that they contrast a small group of stringed instru- ments, such as two violins and a 'cello, with the string section en masse, slead of fealuilng a solo instrument. against a full orchestral background. During his ten years as a film actor, Ed. was consistently cast as a criminal. As radio's Steve Wilson, a part he took over from Edward G. Robinson and has played for the past five years, he spends his time honestly, trapping the members of the underworld he once portrayed on the screen. Pawley was born in Kansas City, Mo., and he began his varied career in tent shows, His first role in the legitimate theatre was that of a Chinese in a touring company of "East Is West." Later, he won a long-term en- gagement with the Lunt & Fon- tanne Theatre Guild Company. , Among his film credits are included such gun and gangster films as Each Dawn I Die, Gun Law, Moun- tain Justice, Sworn Enemy and Sinner Takes All Now tar sie's GROWN UP TO BE A MENACE TO LIFE AND LIMB, GUESS WHO'S BLAMED! > - 2 SUCH A SPOILED BRAT! Anniversary (Continued from Page 3) then; cr we might look at the fu- ture, and say that God's goodness is visible in our hopes for what is to come. But the message of the | Psalmist is that the goodness of God {can be seen today, and is being seen by those that truly believe in Him." Love Means Many Things In his evening sermon on 'Steps to Love", Mr. Kewley reminded the congregation that although Jesus came preaching the good news of God's love, we do not yet appreciate the full meaning of His love for man. "Love to us today means many things," he said, of God's love by confusing it with lesser things described by the same word." "In a superficial understanding of the meaning of the word, we may say that we love food, or chance acquaintances, or a cular piece of clothing. are many higher forms of love than this; there is love of duty, inspired by our faith in a dteam, in our country, in a purpose, in honour, or in freedom. Both these forts of love are real, things we can rec- ognize, yet they are not at all like love of our God." "A further step up the ladder is what we call Platonic Love, the association of two friends in a com- munion which is rich and wonder- ful, such as that of David and Jonathan, or of Damon and Pythias. This is a deeper and more spir- itual love, with a feeling of under- standing, and a mental and spir- itual bond. But even this is not as wonderful as the lo¥& of God for man. We must take a further step. A keautiful and sensitive thing is the creative experience of romantic love, which is so much misunder- stood and trampled upon today, said Mr. Kewley. "The newspa- pers today may tend to emphasize the more unpleasant and unnatural results of mistaken romantic love, such as divorces and unnatural unions. But they forget the many beautiful experiences of true ro- mantic love which never make the headlines." Parent Love Deep "Still higher is the love of a parent for a child; here there is something added which is moving creative and even redemptive. Truly is it a wonderful thing to see a parent changed by the force of love for a child. Can there be anything more wonderful than this love? Yes, for how many have not seen a parent's love for a child w*'~h does not deserve it, which is completely bad. Yet the parent continues to pour out its heart in love for a creature which deserves it not." Thus, by a series ¢" small steps we approach the ideal of God's love for man, uncalled for and unde- served, Let us then think of the message that is the heart of the Christian church: "God loves you." This gift, which could never be earned or merited, is there, given to us in all its power, through Jesus Christ," 'Let us not go forth into a new year in this church without each of us saying "Come, thou wonderful love into my heart."
