Hopper played a lot of aggressive an good hockey for the Rockets too but he spoiled his night's work with a | chippy penally that resulted almost directly in two Oshawa goals, in the "Red" third period. For Oshawa, the starting line of "Dusty" Blair, d |Dice set-up pass from his centre, 'Dusty" Blair and beat Somerville cleanly. "Dusty" Blair was "hot' night, with four assists and a goal late in the game, for a five-point total. He helped Ted O'Connor and "Red" Stephen on each of their goals. O'Connor got the first two in the first period while Stephen got his two, one in the second and the other in the third session Stephéh and Tkachuk were awarded the silverware, with Hendry getting "honorable mention * As + Coach Tommy Anderson didn't have Frank Sullivan, regular defenceman, dressed for Saturday night's game, "Sully" nursing an infected foot. Hall, Thompson, Scott and Hill all saw plenty of regular action as a result and performed well. Hall played his best game of the with Th also making good moves while Scott is showing improvement each time out, at the blue-line job. While the Blair-Stephen-0O'Connor line hogged the limelight Satur- day night, Gamble, Hooper and Montgomery contributed to the total Chapman continues to appear to be trying hard but not getting very iar, however, the entire Oshawa club showed an etfige over the Rockets in the matter of speed and their hard-skating, earnest try is pleasing entertai for the fans. The win should put the Generals in fine fettie for their next game, which is on Wednesday night, When Syl Apps and his Marlbores visit Oshawa Arena, bring- ing along George Armstrong, holder of the "Red" Tilson Memorial Trophy and the 1947-48 Junior OHA scoring ehampionship. 4 w + Oshawa's victory Saturday might put them in a tie with Barrie Flyers for third place in the race, with ten points apiece. St. Michael's College Majors rapped a 6-1 defeat nto the Guelph Biltmores on Saturday after- noon and that prevented the "Hatters" from keeping pace with the Generals in their climp to overtake Barrie Flyers. In the other game Saturday afternoon, St. Catharines chalked up another 5-3 victory over Marlboros to boost their first-place lead over the rest of the pack. The win by St. Mike's would indicate that Coach Joe Primeau has got the Blair. and "Irish" in a clicking mood and from here in, the Bay Street College | pucksters will be tough to beat. Tee Pees are still wining along with the Generals the only team to take a fall out of them, but of course Tee Pees haven't met Windsor Spitfires yet. That happens this Satur- day night in Windsor." Meanwhile, there is no game booked for the Junjor "A" loop 'tonight but tomorrow Stratford Kroehlers visit St. Kitts and go right back to Stratford on Wednesday night, when Marlies are playing here, Galt is at Windsor and Barrie visits Guelph, * * Up at Alexandra Park on Saturday afiernoon, the Oshawa "Red Raiders" won their fourth-straight rugby playoff battle, de- feating Toronto St. Aidan's 21-0 in the second game of the Big Four Junior "B" ch jonship finals. That win enabled the local Junior, Raiders to take the final round from St. Aidan's by a total of 27 to 0, it being a home-and-home total-points affair. The sturdy Red Raiders had too much weight and power along the line, plus a defi- nite edge in ball-carrying and passing, that proved too much for St. Aidan's. "Red" McDermaid got a couple of touchdowns, one on a behind -the-line fumble, while Jimmie Loreno and Jedd Wilson each toted the bali over the St. Aidan's goal-line for a major score. None of the four Oshawa touchdowns were converted but the Red Raiders proved their superiority in definite fashion and also proved, that when playing against Junior "B" talent, they are the pick of the province, > * oh In the other grid tilt here on Saturday afternoon, played earlier in the day, Oshawa Collegiate and Vocational Institute dropped a 16-6 decision to the powerful junior grid team from the Peterboro C.V.8. in the first game of their Lakeshore District COSSA grid series. This too is a home-and-home, total points series and the Oshawa students face the task of wiping out that 10-point deficit, when they play the return game back in Peterboro on Thursday. The OCVI boys' rallied after the visitors had scored the first touchdown and Mowesky carried the ball over for a major and then converted to give Oshawa a 6-5 lead. The Oshawa Collegiate boys held the 6-5 lead until the final quarter and then faded as the Young-to-Evans forward pass combination for Peterboro set up a couple of major scores. Lively Third Period The third period proved a pep- | pery session from start to finish { with Galt Rockets trying very hard to break into the scoring col- | umn, right from the face-off, with | Hopper setting the attack pace for |the Rockets while Tkachuk con- {tinued his yoeman work on the | yparguard to give Sommerville sound protection. | Tempers wore thin under the dil- | igent checking tactics and finally | Hill and Broughton tiffed in a | high-sticking session and drew | penalties. Minus two players, the Rockets were no match for the galloping ganging act, Frank Hooper getting the first on help from Gamble and ond goal of the night, with his line- mates, Blair and O'Connor help- ing him out as did the Galt de- fense pair, by backing in to block Sommerville's view. The momentum of this attack continued even after Hooper and Price were back from the penalty box and "Dusty" Blair notched his tally, with O'Connor and Scott helping along, to make it 7-0. Just Misses Shutout Stew Hendry missed his shutout, after pulling off a flock of brilli- ant saves in the third period es- pecially, plus some fine puck-stop- ping in the second stanza. The heart-breaking tally to spoil the shutout was notched with just 29 seconds left to play when Hopper and Tkachuk worked the uck deep into Oshawa territory and Bouve- 11 pootted the disc with a lazy-look- Ing shot, from about a dozen feet out. Maple Leafs Eke Out Tie With Rangers By The Canadian Press Beaten 2-0 by Montreal Cana- diens Saturday night, Detroit Red Wings roared back Sunday to plas- ter Boston Bruins 7-3 and protect their first-place spot in the National Hockey League. Montreal's win -- Bill Durnan's third shutout this year--moved Ca- nadiens into a second place tie with Boston, four points behind Detroit. New York Rangers battled Tor- onto Maple Leafs to a 3-3 draw Saturday and then dropped a 4-2 decision to Chicago Black Hawks That game put Rangers and Black Hawks into a tie for the cellar posi- tion with four points each, three be- hind. H. Lumley made 26 saves against Canadiens in the Saturday .zame, but it wasn't enough to stop big Butch Bouchard: Bouchard who scored only four goals in all of last season, scored twice in less than a minute of the first period. Although the week-end left Red Wings four points ahead, Montreal had one and Boston two games in hand. Moe Clipped Again Bill Moe, just nicely recovered from the pre-season car accident that badly crippled the Rangers, was caried from the ice Sunday | night when Doug Bentley inadver- | tently broke his stick across Moe's mouth, losening six teeth.
