The biggest single unit in Wales' revived steel industry -- and the biggest capital steel undertaking ever erected in Europe -- will be in full production by 1951, turning firms in the area to carry through construction and start the hot metal rolling from the furnaces. The work will cost nearly £60,- 000,000 ($240,000,000). Of this the parent companies have put up £10,000,000, the Finance Corporation for Industry (backed -by the Bank of England and cther banking and | insurance houses) £35,000,000, and | the general public £15,000,000 -- of which £4,000,000 was raised by open subscription, the other £11,000,000 | underwritten by investment con- | cerns. 7 Seven thousand workmen now swarm over the 560-acre site, shift- ing 4,500,000 cubic yards of sand dune, slag heap and marsh muck to level the land where the enor- mous plant will stand. Meantime, buildings are going up already and docks are being laid. Staggering statistics are a dime- a-dozen at Margam. Just one: when the plant is in production there will be considerably more "than 100 miles of railway line operating within it. Much of the original planning | and most of the day-to-day super- vision of the work is in the hands | of W. F. Cartwright, general man- | ager of the company's steel division. The 42-year-old former railway engineer, a big man with twinkling brown eyes and an engaging grin, has been in on the ground floor since 1947 when he and his asso- ciates started out with "Plan A, Version 1." But, he told a party of overseas correspondents touring the site, no plan of 'such an undertaking can afford to stay static. To incorporate every latest technical advance | Europe, constant revision is neces- sary. Present construction is going for- ward under "Plan K, Version 3." | When the last piece of equipment | is in place, Margam will be geared | other way to live" | | | | | to handle 40,000 tons of ironore a | week. Twenty thousand tons of coke | and coal will be used to convert the | ore to 20,000 tons of pig iron! This | will produce 15,000 tons of "new" steel. There will be 9,000 tons of scrap iron melted in, and an addi- | tional 6,000 tons of "rotating" | scrap brings gross projected output | to 30,000, CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SUBJECT | "Doctrine of Atonement" was | the subject of the Lesson Sermon | which was read in all churches of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world, including First Church of Christ, Scientist, 64 Colborne Street | East, Oshawa, on Sunday, October | 17.
