Al- though it is only four years since Marten's Furs opened its branch store in Oshawa, ~, it is over forty years since this firm started manufac- turing fur coats, and it has in continuous opera- | tion since 1908, long before | been many of its present-day cus- tomers were born. 'A visit to the factory of Marten's Furs, where skil- ful workers take the raw furs and from them fashion stylish garments which are so much admired when they are worn by their purchas- érs is an interesting experi- ence. Through the kind co- operation of Mrs. Wallace, the local manager, it was possible to-take some photo- graphs of some of these skil- led rkers engaged in some be Ji many operations involved in the. manufacture | of fur coats, and these are shown in the pictures which appear on this page. In addition to the factory headquarters in Toronto, which supplies its agents throughout Canada, Mar- ten's Furs operates its own direct factory branches, one | of which is the Oshawa Branch. In addition, ten's maintains an ultra mod- | ern refrigerated cold stor-. age plant on its own prem- ises for the complete protec- | tion of furs during the warm months of the year. The faetory workrooms are considered by those fa- miliar with the trade as be- | ing among the heat eqitip ped in the country, and the firm's staff is completely | Mar- | After the final sewing of the skins, the fur coat body is blocked to pattern, trimmed and Joined by operators. Finally, the finishers interline, tape and sew in the silk lining by hand. For Oshawa's Women urs Produce Stylish Furs skin into the full length of the appearance of stripes on The operator sews the fur coat. This is what gives the a Grey Lamb coat. The most important part in the manufacture of a fur garment is the cutting. Mr. Holdswerth above, shows how a Grey Lamb coat is cut. Each skin is cut on the leather side in strips of approximately 1" width on a diagonal cut, when taken apart and sewn the skin is the full length of fur coat and about 1/3 its original width, A partial view of the cutting departmemt, at Marten's Furs factory. These aristocrats of the fur industry are the highest paid in the trade and the final appearance of a fur coat depends almost entirely on how well the furs are cut in fhe first stage of manufacture.
