THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2 ) Christmas Cheer Fund 1948 THE DAILY TIMES.GAZETTE PAGE THIRTC Brings Happiness To Needy Of Community Christmas--the very word spells | enchantment. The season of good- will and good fellowship works its age-old magic among men, and the spirit of loving kindness pours out in a silver stream that softens and encompasses us all. Since the Wise Men brought their gifts of gol, frankincense and myrrh man has found joy in giving zifts to those he loves, and preparing a feast fit for this day of days. Only one shadow can fall across this glowing picture--the . thought that others, alone or without means cannot take part in the general re- Jjoicing. This haunting thought in the midst of plenty, can make childish laughter a hollow mockery, and Christmas fare as sawdust. Prepare now for a crefree Christmas, by | adding a little more to your usual contribution to the Community | Chest for the Christmas Cheer | Fund. The Christmas Cheer Fund which | is operated by a group of willing volunteer workers is the key to Christmas happiness to those who are in the shadow. It reaches out to all old age pensioners, to mothers who depend on Mother's Allowance, to families on Relief and all bor- derline cases. One year members of the Christ- mas Cheer committee packed, car- ried and delivered 12,000 baskets. Times were bad, but as long as there are deserted homes, sickness and death so long will the' Christ- mas Cheer committee be faced with its stupendous task. The knowledge that every apple, orange, chocolate bar or toy they pack will bring plea- sure to those less fortunate, light- ens their load, and by Christmas | Eve when all is completed, their | hearts are happy indeed. To those who are living alone | goes a cheque to buy a Christmas | dinner at a restaurant with enough { perhaps for a movie afterward. To a little home where the father is in- | capacitated goes a basket worth 12 or 14 dollars to provide Christmas | fare for all, and toys for children | who totherwise would go without. The Boy Scouts and Simcoe Hall Hobby Shop renovate toys which | eventually find their way into the | Christmas Cheer Fund ° hampers, give their services untiringly--but | without money the Christmas Cheer | | Fund- is helpless. At the busiest time of the year these workers are willing to take on this tremendous task to enable us to rest assured that none has been forgotten. The magic of Christmas lies in the joy of giving. Give now, before it is too late, so that when your family, safe, warm and happy, gathers round the gift-decked tree you 'will realize the benediction voiced by Tiny Tim "God Bless Us Every One." Menzies Says Labor Party Lost Ground Ottawa, Oct. 21--(CP) --Gordon Menzies, now opposition leader and | former Prime Minister of Australia, | said Wednesday Australia's Labor government had undoubtedly lost ground within the last year and added there was a general feeling the government would be defeated |in the 1949 general elections. The frank, handsome Liberal al- so told a press conference he be- lieved in closer ties among coun- tries of the British Commonwealth, that he saw no reason why a Can- adian shouldn't be Governor-Gen- eral of Australia and vice versa, and that he was an advocate of contin- uation of Australian appeals to the Privy Council in London. His party also favored outlawing of Commu- nists. Mr. Menzies arrived by train for a three-day visit as guest of Aus- tralian High Commissioner Francis Forde, a former Labor Prime Min- | ister and an old political foe. The visitor is rounding off a trip to Britain, Europe and the United States that began in June to re- establish contracts after seven years at home. Mr. Menzies referred to two re- cent developments in Australia as | an indication that the people were | willing to ig Socialists but not Socialism. One was .the refusal to sanction permanent power for the central government over -rents and | prices. The other was the buffers and members of the Service Clubs |that have confronted the proposal | leader Drew. to nationalize the trading banks. He Watches and Waits, -- Don't Fail Him Little chaps like to know all about Christmas. Perhaps in their little minds, uncluttered with material things, | they understand the magic of the season of goodwill. The Christmas Cheer Fund brings toys to tiny tots, food for the family table, and little comforts for the aged. The Christmas Cheer Fund dips into the Community Chest.
