A "man of many parts", Mr. Merigold made a name for himself on the East Coast as a song-and-dance-man with the Eastern Air Command Show. Since the war, as a D.V.A. student of acting at the Royal Con- servatory of Musig of Toronto, he has met with success in straight dramatic roles. It is his special flair for comedy, however, which drew plaudits for his work in sev- eral Royal Conservatory Opera pro- ductions and which won for him a leading place in the company. A native of Hamilton, Mr. Merigold is another young Canadian actor who | dares to hope that his future lies here in Canada. 7.00--~Toast and Jamboree 7 00--Breakfast Melodies 7:00--News--Musical Clock 7:00--News WEE! 7:05~Top o' the Jacrnine 7:15--Clint Buehiman 7:15--Morning Songs 7:30 7:30--Press News 7:30--Hcaalines 7:30--CBC. Tuna Tourney CBC Problem Almost as big as the tuna fish themselves were the problems CBC engineers had to face to bring Canadian and overseas listeners a description of the recent Interna- tional Tuna Match at Wedgeport, Nova Scotia. Lack of wire facilities at the tiny fishing village made direct broad- casts impossible, and made neces- sary delayed broadcasts recorded on the actual scene. But. working from a forty-foot open boat is not Arleigh Canning's idea of operating under favorable conditions, especially when a four- to-five knot tide tears across Sol- diers Rip, a mile-square area where the fish congregate. Canning, Supervisor of Operators at Halifax, was forced to run his two recording units--on which Eng- lish, Spanish and Norwegian broad- casts were recorded--from storage batteries, with the aid of a vibra- tor. ME manger W. E. S. Biggs, CBC ritime Regional Representative, and Program Director Syd Ken- nedy did the English broadcast descriptions, with Krabbe Smith and Eugene Llano doing the Nor- wegian and Spanish respectively. Interviews were recorded in the three tongues immediately after an angler had landed his catch, At the close of each day's fish- ing, operators and announcers had to drive eighteen miles back to Yar- mouth over dirt roads to prepare their scripts for transmission to Halifax and Montreal. There followed quick checks with the telephone companies and the Hydro companies involved. For the latter it was very important that the recorded descriptions be re- layed at the same frequency at which they were recorded. Hotel rooms of the CBC crew were turned into temporary studios and control rooms for each of the three nights following the fishing. CEDED TO U. S.
