PAGE FOUR THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE. ; MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1948 LATEST NEWS OF THE COUNTY TOWN OF WHITBY Business Office: Miss G. Macpherson. Editor: Robert Corbett Phone 703, All Departments "SY | Girls Beat Crack Toronto Club 13-3 In Whitby Sat. In top-notch form, Whitby girls team scored a 13-3 softball win over Toronto Gordon Jeweller Club at the town park here Saturday. The 1947 city junior champions just couldn't match the singles, doubles, smart fielding and catching of the locals who confined them to scoring all three of their runs in the fourth inning. Whitby started the scoring with a bang in the third bringing in five | runs. In their half of the fourth 'they followed on with a slick home fun by Carrie McGuire and another run by Joyce Cowling. Carrie Mc- Guire again made a spectacular play by a catch at the shortstop position. . On the pitching mound June Cow- ling was in good form and every member of the team was at her best. The team was organized early this summer by Bert Johnston, a man whose eye for a keen ball player is not at all dimmed by his 80 summers. Coach for the Whitby team. is "Doc" McEwen and Bert Fisher was in charge of the To- ronto girls. Ed. Samanski did an excellent job of umpiring behind the plate. At the next home game Isabelle Moore will take over the pitching chore as she is also very handy * playing this position. Attendance at the game was small considering the good brand of ball which was put on. Not at all discouraged, Manager Johnston has big plans for next season and announces that uniforms of blue with gold shorts have been purchased.
