PHONE 249 Chicago Man Was Lecturer Here Saturday Harold Molter, CS.B,, of Chica- go, Illinois, a member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, The First Church, of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass, delivered a lecture on Christian Science entitled, "Christian Sci- ence: The Science of Eternal Life", in the Masonic Temple on Satur- day night last. The lecturer spoke in part sub- stantially as follows: - In her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Discoverer and Founder of Chris- tian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, has mankind, in one short sentence of only thirteen words, the most complete definition of God which the world has ever known. It includes seven nouns, or synon- yms, for Deity, each representing a particular aspect of God, and four adjectives which apply to every synonym. "God is incorporeal, di- vine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love" p. 466). Since God is the one and only creator, and since the Bible testi- mony indicates thay He is Spirit, therefore all creatioh must be spir- jtual and can have in it no element of matter: On the basis of these revealed facts, Mrs. Eddy declares (ibid., p. 264): "Spirit and its for- mations are the only realities of be- ing. Matter disappears under the microscope of Spirit." Let us now look through "the microscope of Spirit," through the lens of Chris- tian Science, to gain a clear view of God's creation, This view is pre- sented to us in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. Beginning on page 475 of Science and Health there is a word picture of creation, depicting man and the universe as formed by Spirit. It states that man is not made up of material organs and elements, but is wholly spirit- ual: he is the compound idea of God, including every idea which exists in divine consciousness. And now let us take a good look at the condition named material that which is so-called, the universe of material persons, places, and things, which we seem to touch, taste, hear, see, and feel all around us. What are they; where do they come from; and what is their relationship to Spirit and its perfect creation? In all our waking "hours, and often in sleep, we entertain mental pictures, or concepts, or persons, places, and things, dwelling in time ang space. false material senses. In the Bible this sense testimony is called the carnal mind, and Mrs. Eddy names it mortal mind. The material uni- verse, therefore, is but the false testimony of the so-called carnal or mortal mind, and its objects are] the reverse of spiritual ideas. They | are illusions or false concepts. Christ Jesus, more than anyone else, refuted and rejected the evid- ence of the material senses, and re- placed this false evidence with the testimony of Spirit, He was con- stantly showing forth, in thought and deed, the very nature and qual- ities of God, thus presenting to hu- man view the true idea of God. This gave him the right to the ti- tle of Christ. Mrs. Eddy defines "Crist" in the "Glossary" of Sci- ence and Health (p. 583) as fol- These mental pictures | are but the false testimony of the} lows:' "CHRIST. The divine mani- festation of God, which comes to the ,lesh to destroy incarnate er- ror." The destruction of the false con- cepts or. illusions of the so-called carnal or mortal mind by the Christ-power is true salvation, The door through which the in- dividual enters into the realization of his oneness with God is spirit- ual prayer. Mrs, Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 12) that the prayers of Jesus "were deep and conscientious protests of Truth, ., . of man's unity with Truth and Love." Healing, or demonstration, in Christian Science ~ inevitably re- sults ~from the 'acceptance of the spirtiuale facts of being in- recep- tive ind ;idual consciousness. It is always a spiritual idea which heals and not a person, Any illusion of material sense disappears before the truth, as certainly as darkness flees before light. S8o-it is in prayer. In order to get rid »f sin, sickness, dis- cord, er death, we reach for- and let in the light of spiritual facts regarding God and His creation. In the practice of Christian Sci- ence there is no place for the use of material remedies or manipulation of any kind. True prayer unites the individual with God, who heals all our diseases and dispels all human discords About the middle of the nine- teenth century, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, discovered anew the healing and regenerating pow- er of God, as ever available to every- one who becomes willingly recep- tive to its impartial ministrations. Mrs. Eddy named her discovery Christian Science, because it is the Science or underlying law or rule of true Christian being and acting. From early childhogd, Mrs. Eddy read, studied, and treasured the Bi- ble. During her early years, the Bi- ble was the center of her home, In view of these facts it is not surpris- ing to find that the first of the six tenets or important points of Chris- tian Science reads as follows: "As adnerents of Truth, we take the in- spired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal life" (Science and Health, p. 407). It is the general cgpinion of man- kind wu... ceernal Life can only be achieved after the change called death, However, Christ Jesus, who knew more about Life than anyone else, rejected that belief centuries ago, Listen to these words of truth freen the lips of the great master Christiza: "If thou wilt enter into life, kep the commandments;" and again, "He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life", (Mat- thew 19:17, and John 5:24). In these pronouncements on the subject of Life, we find no author- ity for the necessity of an experi- ence called death, Life eternal is a state of consciousness, for it con- sists jn knowing God and His Christ aright. Jesus said to Mary, when He was called to raise her brother Lazarus from death, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die" (John 11:25, 26). The case, in King's Bench Court, was that of William J. Lawrence, formerly of Montreal and now of Belleville, charged with fradulent re-sale of a property. The hearing had almost been com- pleted when the defence called Lawrence's brother, a court steno- grapher. His Lordship intervened to say he had known the stenograrher througlr his courtroom duties for 12 years and felt therefore he would | not be "observing my oath of office 1, 19468 if I were to continue to .sit at = this trial." The crcwn alleges that Lawrence sold a property on William Stree in August, 1946, and to have re- sold the same property later to hi: brother. R. W. Barclay testified he signed an agreement to Aug. 23, 194€ buy the property and paid La rence's agent, the Guardian Trus Co., $500. There was an additiona $6,000 to be paid within 10 days oZ» the sale, Barclay said. Later he noticed several improve- ments were being made to the pro: perty. Thinking this strange, he said he investigated and found the property had been sold to Law: rence's brother. Lawrence testified he was going out of town and transferred the property to his brother so the brother could complete sale ar- rangements with Barclay. Law: rence denied any fraudulent inten: tions.
