GULF AREA Signals System Links Far North Edmonton -- (CP) -- The rapid expansion of the Canadian Army's northern signals system from one station to a metwork of 20 in the Northwest Territories and thegYu- ken in a period of 25 years has been ou ine by Lt.-Col. W, W. Lockhart of Edmonton, now com- manding officer of the system. It its inception in 1923, Lt.-Col. Loekhart, then a corporal, was a member of the first party sent in- to' the north to establish two sta- tions and was one of four who set up the first office at Mayo, Y.T. On the first trip into Mayo the party went by boat along with the equipment and erected a small cab- in which was used as living quar- ters and signals station. After reaching Mayo and setting up the station, the party sat around for a month before the first mes- sage came through from Dawson, YT. 'Settlers in the district didn't show much faith in the wireless set and the words "It won't work" became common, Col. Lockhart re- to do free hand and pattern |calls About the only one to show any faith in the station was "Kippy" Boerner, a prospector who filed the first commercial message at Mayo. "The message was sent about a month later," Col. Lockhart said. The equipment used at the first station in the north was a 120-watt set which last ,was used in Ger- many by occupation forces. 5 41a--Lawn Mower Service Ee Te, YOU LAWN, er or sharpen re] nj nd, Reconditioned rowers 39b--Male and Female Help for sale. C. -- (CP) -- Angler Armitage Ashland says he caught an eight-inch trout in his kitchen sink, and. he doesn't know how it got there. Ashland's water service failed. He disconnected the sink pipes and the trout flopped out. Department Store Replaces Hostel For War Veterans Vancouver -- (CP) -- The form- er Vancouver Hotel, used as a hos- tel for war veterans and their families, is to be razed and a large department store erected on the site. Since a small group of veterans marched and took possession of the structure 2% years ago in pro- test against its destruction during the housing shortage, it has been used as a hostel. About 1,300 per- sons are living there now. A recent announcement that the building and site had been pur- chased by the T. Eaton Co. Ltd. and that the structure would be torn down, drew protests from the Canadian Legion branch here. Le- glon officials said that it should be allowed to stand until the acute housing situation eases. Hon. H. H. Stevens, president of the Citizens' Rehabflitation Coun- cil, which has been operating the building, has announced that it could not be operated after the end of June or the first week in July. "In the operation -of this hostel we are. faced with a situation which no responsible body could be ex- pected to continue," he said. "To continue operation for an- other' winter would impose the ne- cessity of replacing heating, sani- tary and wiring systems in order to insure safety of tenants. Cost would be prohibitive." He said the heating system in the 30-year-old building was worn out. Replacement would .cost about $150,000. One boiler was out of commission and the remaining two were in bad shape. "This building could not be com- mercially operated 'except as a luxury. hotel at high rents," Mr. Stevens said. "Expenses on fuel ofl and. taxes alone exceed the total rent received from tenants. "Rents received during a 26- month period ending last month toe talled $244,135 for the 525 rooms used. They ranged from $11 per month for a single student veterans to $13.78 for a single non-student veterans. Family rooms cost from $22.50 to $27.50 a month. "Average cost per tenant per room has been $17.88. Operating room costs average out to $47.91 per som per month, or a total of $654, 0 "This means the people of Cana- da have been subsidizing rents in this building at the approximate rate of 60 per cent." Income apart from rents is ob- tained by a Dominion grant of $330,802, a Vancouver city grant of $52,000 and 27,000 from the Air Raid Precautions committee. Mr. Stevens sald efforts were be- ing made to find other accommo- dations for tenants and he beliey- ed these would be successful.
